Ouija boards

sojourner

Annoyingly Progressive Since 2006
Three of my friends and I plan to hang out soon. We asked each other what games we should play. Two are Catholic, one is Latter Day Saint with Buddhist culture (not western oriented), and just me.

So friend Bob (LDS) suggests we bring a ouija board. I say, cool. The other two said no. They said the board is used for evil purposes.

I asked my bus driver whose a evangalistic pastor from Africa. He says that spirits are in objects and the board ouija is the spirit of satan. It wasnt "just" the purpose of the board; thats understandable. No, they all said the Board itself is possessed.

Now, Im an animist. I know spirits can inhabit objects. I also know it depends on the association that object has with the person or spirit.

QUESTION: If there is no association (no one own the board) and we bought it from toys r us, how is the board itself evil?

Im looking for answers from abrahamic faiths and those who believe that ouija board is evil for whatever reason.
I've heard all this before. I played with a Ouija board many times when I was a kid. And nothing happened to me.

Oh... Wait! I married my ex-wife and she stole my soul (I eventually got it back).

Yeah. I played with it a couple of times. My childhood friend didn't want to touch the board. She prodded it with a stick so to not touch it. I feel you get out of it what you put into it.

My friend in the OP never explains anything, though. She doesn't like challenging conversations about her faith and culture.

Hello Carlita.....
In 1963 on Christmas Eve, a group of my sister's friends came to our home. They were in their mid teens. They cut out little paper squares and wrote letters and numbers etc on them, together with a 'yes' and a 'no' card, placed all upon a round table, gathered round and put their hands upon a glass.

I watched.

They asked questions, and the glass raced around the table, and the group called out the letters and answers in excitement. Eventually one of the girls called out 'Is God real?'

All the girls fell backwards as the table and all flew across the room, smashing a glass in the double doors to the back garden. But the spectacle that really shook me was all those little pieces of paper flying up into the air to drift down like falling snow, all around our lounge. And the screams of shock.

I have never 'worked' a Ouija board in my life, neither before nor after that incident.

I believe there is a big difference in experience based on expectations.

I believe it is superstition to think that the board itself is evil. Sometimes the Christian community has the same view of meditation. I would be willing to wager that if people were only willing to alow the Holy Spirit to participate nothing evil would ensue.

I believe this smacks of a demon since the reaction against God was so intense.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the manufacturer puts the evil in the ink/paint. That reminds me - need to pick up some evil from the store later... gotta write that down.

Norman: Hi Carlita, interesting, a Latter Day-Saint with a Buddhist culture. Well, I see it this way, I have heard stories from friends who have played the Ouija board and had negative experiences with it. I have never personally played the game, however, in my opinion, play games that are wholesome and fun for the whole family. Do things to draw the spirit of the Lord into your life, home, family and friends. ;)

Eh. Yeah. The bus driver saw me with Buddhist bracelet I got from a torist shop and he remarked that the bracelet can contain evil. I found a connection. A lot of objects people object to are made of wood. Crucifix, Ouiji board, buddhist bracelets for males, prayer beads. I heard that since wood is from the earth, the spirits of the deceased can inhabit the wood grown over graves (like trees). An native american tale, or so I read.

Yeah. His mother is Veitnamese Buddhist (full blown) and his father is LDS. My friend believes in God, goes to Church, even fussed at me because I dont believe in God. Yet, he took me to a Buddhist temple where we gave repects to the Buddhas and The Buddha Himself in prayer.

Dont ask. I tried.
