I got a splinter under my thumb nail!!

Does anyone have any tips on how to make it come out enough so I can grab it with tweezers?

I had one and I pulled it out by gently pressing it up against the nail with my pocketknife. If your knife is sharp, you can also dig into the quick a little to get under the splinter. It's painless compared to the agony of the splinter in general.

I generally wimper and whine (with attendant poorly cloaked attempts a garnering sympathy) while I obsessively worry at the splinter until it either comes out or has been worked out by my picking at it.

The methods suggested by the previous posters would probably work better...

I'd recommend against hitting the spacebar with the affected thumb. Do you have any duct tape or anything sticky like that you could use to try pulling it out a bit further?

That sounds ouchy! :(

Trust me, if you do it carefully and slow, it doesn't hurt any more than the splinter.

'course my splinter was driving me so crazy I would have ripped my nail off to get it out.

I've done the same with cuticle scissors. I have a pretty high tolerance for pain, so maybe I should just :run:

It's all about payoff for me. If the splinter hurts worse than the cut, then it's worth it. I don't remember the pain of fishing it out with my knife, but I do remember that damn splinter. (I did try cuticle scissors but I couldn't cram them under the nail far enough)

That sounds like an amputation to me.

Drink 4 glasses of whiskey, light a big fat Cuban cigar as you heat a meat cleaver over the gas hob, drop the cleaver in one quick swift movement to sever the thumb at the knuckle. If you do it right you should have a clean cut which you can then cauterize with the Cuban cigar.

Job done!

Why not just heat up the cleaver - about an hour in a fire should do it. After your buddy cuts the finger off, just cauterize it with the blade.

Bodda-bing. No worries about gushing blood putting out the cigar. Or wasting the cigar for that matter.:beach:
