I am glad to see that music on this site is listed on the arts section and no thte entertianment section...

I think that pop music and the 3 1/3 minute dribble played via radio is destroying this art. So clean, so hetero, and so readily televised.

I think the demonification of music by the christian right (CR) is an attempt to stifle creativity and self expression not to mention free speech. More and more I see the christian right attempting to censor art.

I understand what we as humans are working towards peace.

We all want peace. We want an end to war and suffering. If that entails genocide or regicide they cry for nukes. At the same time claiming "pro-life". I think the opposition to art is the way the CR is attempting to bubblewrap society. The "wrong" thoughts can lead to the "wrong" actions. With artists such as Marilyin Manson crying out to, "Kill your god, kill your TV" I find myself agreeing with him. Television, entertainment is killing our nation. People need the quick fix and the quick hit. We must medicate our situation. We are far from normal. "A pill to make you numb, a pill to make you dumb, a pill to make you anybody else". The pill in this case is entertainment. The prescription is the watered down 4/4 bands that get nonstop play on radio.

Does anyone think that art plays a large role in society and humanity?
What could possibly be gained by not taking your children to a museam for fear that they may see nudity?
Is the enjoymeny of art nothing merely then practiced hedonism?

I don't think "entertainment" is the problem...entertainment can also be intelligent. Manson is a good example of this...he's an artist and entertainer. BTW his music is mostly in 4/4 metre. Nothing wrong with 4/4. Nothing wrong with other metre either...using one over the other does not mean less talent. Tool writes with very odd/uncommon metre...and they're good to. It's all about the overall result. Indeed...even some pop acts like Britney Spears use very complex harmonies/melodies/rhythm (not that BRITNEY writes those herself of course).

All human works are technically hedonistic. All people pursue happiness and seek to avoid pain. Art is no exception.

Oh the meter thing got me going from a conversation I had yesterday...I was trying to explain Math Rock....That was all just rant lol...shoulda said rant off haha.

Ah but Manson uses shock tactics to draw you in then once you are interested you can find his message. Reality TV, talk shows, etc I find are exercises in social masturbation. Much like Fox news, NBC, CNN, don't really present the news but rather their version of it. Sorta like Foley being shown as a Democrat on Fox. People will eat it up and do what they are told.

True about Britney Spears...but...She has a large audience and has nothing to say. Not that they are her own words. Why do they listen?

What you seem to have a problem with is not entertainment itself, but entertainment without substance? I tend to agree with this. However, artistic merit is not so easy to define. How would one determine what art is valuable and worthwhile and what is not? For instance, I like watching "Family Guy" once in a while, and I could argue that the show is very artistic...it's hand drawn, manipulated with graphics programs, written creatively, and provokes a reaction (laughter mostly...at least in my case). Conversely, The Mona Lisa bores me, though I can see the detail and effort Leonardo used in its creation.

As for the news channels, they masquerade as informative, but strive to be entertaining SIMPLY BECAUSE they're are vehicles whose intentions are nothing more than to get you from one commercial break to the next. Songs on the radio are no different. All are driven by the ad-dollar.

I listen to her music because it's good, and good to dance to. I could care less what she's saying. If I want insightful lyrics: Rush, Bad Religion, Manson, etc. But perhaps Britney's bubblegum appeal is why she has such a large audience. Most young teen girls I've known or heard of don't seem to think too deeply about anything. They would not and do not understand artists like Reznor or Manso because most of them lack the intelligence or critical thinking capability.

No prob with entertainment...just when it becomes a persons med of choice...

Family Guy, The Sipmsons, other shows that boil down to satire are good for comic relief. I disagree what most teens lack intelligence and crit thinking ability...but that would be arguing potential.

But you pretty much stated what I was trying to get at...I think they have those abilities but lack them due to the dumbing down they have to face. Art doesn't play a large role in their personell developement I think this is the outcome.

Look at Looney Tunes. Children don't understand they just laugh at the slap stick humor. I remember an epsisode when Daffy was readin the paper. The front line was about how America won a decisive battle in WW2. He said," Frontal attack on enemy rear, WOO WOO!" Classic.

I agree that this all comes down to the almighty dollar.

You know in Japan the kids are age a part of the "fartherless generation".

The fathers worked so hard and for so long that their kids grew up with out them. Now you have to take vacation and noone can work holidays.

I think schooling is too long and you don't exactly learn anything that can be applied...course this is coming from a guy with the worst spelling evar!!!

i definatley agree, i propose that primary school should go through the normal 5th grade and begin vocational traning then....instead of being 30 when you get your PHD you can be 18 and you waste less money on the school system and teachers that do a half arse job

Vocational training beginning in 6th grade? Because most 6th graders know exactly what they want to do for a living.
How do you know the teachers still wouldn't "do a half arse job"? The better solution is to improve the quality of general education. I've nothing against adding more curiculum that is applicable to the real world...but I don't think pigeonholing kids into a Ph.D program at a young age is going to help anything.

Anyway, this thread has gone way off topic, so I'm out. Start a new one on the above topic if you like, I'll debate it.
