This is true. Within their own tribes and in familiar, unthreatening situations, individuals are usually very pleasant, but the flaws become glaringly obvious in unfamiliar, threatening or authoritarian situations.Am I a goody-two shoes or what? I always found that most people have something to like about them. No one is perfect, and I don't expect them to be. Of course, there is always a person now and then who gets on my bad side- but that's rare.
Consider how the highly 'civilized' Germans behaved during the last world war, or the Japanese in Nanking.
Google the Stanford Prison Experiment or the Milgram Experiment to see how thin the veneer of 'civilized behavior' really is.
