Perfect Bible?

None of it is "perfect"......I believe the stories were originated from the sumerian record...(That's just me though..I guess)

I sometimes use the RSV (32 christian scholars of the highest eminence and backed by 50 cooperating denminations)......(translating from the earliest of manuscripts).....

I use others as well...Some have good hebrew/greek translations and lexicographical information. And some are more plain english renderings.

To mestema: There is no argument. its a fact. It was just a little joke anyway. I know the LDS wont call there book the " head in a hat " version, but thanks for taking it so personal.

I guess you learn something new each day. right?
Sure did.
I learned that because you can support the statement, which is phrased specifically to start an argument, with a questionable source, you feel it is just fine and dandy to make said statement.

You have demonstrated that claiming to be better than that by association is just that, a claim.

He stuck his head in a top hat to read the golden plates, correct?

The next day after this happened, I went to the house where Joseph Smith Jr., lived, and where he and Harris were engaged in their translation of the Book. Each of them had a written piece of paper which they were comparing, and some of the words were "my servant seeketh a greater witness, but no greater witness can be given him." There was also something said about "three that were to see the thing" - meaning I supposed, the Book of Plates, and that "if the three did not go exactly according to orders, the thing would be taken from them." I enquired whose words they were, and was informed by Joseph or Emma, (I rather think it was the former) that they were the words of Jesus Christ. I told them then, that I considered the whole of it a delusion, and advised them to abandon it.

The manner in which he pretended to read and interpret, was the same as when he looked for the money-diggers, with the stone in his hat, and his hat over his face, while the Book of Plates were at the same time in the woods!

that was just a quote from Issac Hale ( Smiths father in law) he was there and saw it.

The only reason he MAY have put (if there is any truth to that) the Urim and Thummim (seer stone) in a hat, would be to shade it from the light/sun, in order to see into the stone, just as we would dim a light in order to see a TV or a computer screen better.

I am blood related to Joseph Smith's brother Hyrum. I can assure you these men are not fakes. My wife has seen Hyrum. He appeared to her in the spirit. These are true men of God. To speak against them would be a dire mistake.

There is truth to that. Read the eyewitness account.

So he did stick his head in the hat. Like I said.
He also stuck his head in the hat when he was digging for buried treasure. HHHMMMMM.....

I did not speak against them. The father and law did. He was an eyewitness. I just quoted his writings, but thanks for the warning. I wouldn't not want something bad to happen to me. I was close, but the father in law made the " dire mistake". LOL

Affidavit of Isaac Hale, father-in-law of Joseph Smith, Jr., given at Harmony Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania on 20 March 1834 Source: "Mormonism," Susquehanna Register, and Northern Pennsylvanian 9 (1 May 1834):1, Montrose, Pennsylvania, emphasis omitted.

The mormon church has this "claim" in there offical records.

Isaac Hale was there. where you? Who are you to say it is a questionable.

which is phrased specifically to start an argument

I guess it worked , because you are arguing with me. ... ding , ding, ding...... WINNER!!!

LDS history is really not important or is it on topic with the OP so can we stay away from it for now and maybe start a thread dedicated to that subject?

rocka21the OP asked about the "perfect bible".....Although I don't think there is such a thing.....what do you think? Which one(s) do you use?

Wow! How long has it been since you reminded us of this, FFH?
When someone attacks Joseph Smith, I feel compelled to defend him and also feel compelled to give the reason why. I will continue to mention my blood relation to that family as long as I feel a need. There are others on this forum too you know, who don't know my relation to Joseph Smith.

Would you not defend any of your relatives if their character was being attacked ?? My Smith blood begins to boil, even though I'm not a Smith I still have that direct blood claim to that family and that part of me comes out. I feel very very close to that family. I can't describe it any other way. It's as if I know them without having ever met them.

My wife was allowed to see Hyrum Smith in the spirit, which she needed to see in order to strenghthen her testimony. She said he was a lot less serious than Joseph Smith.

These are some of the best men the church has ever seen.

Agreed, no more " head in hat talk".;)

If you go back to post #22, dirty, you can see my answer about the bible.

Like I have said before, no book can be perfect because it frames the truth, if you want to call it that, into a fixed point in time and history and holds the believer from experiencing what is real. Therefore, the person who holds that truth is to be found in that book has bound themselves in much the same manner. What can be substantiated? What can be called truth? The words of a book? Should not truth be held to a higher standard? All of this is the cause of the confusion of mankind...We tend to minimize truth and turn it into something far-off and unbelievable.

I'm not trying to start and arguement since we've already had our discussion. I also apologize for going off topic again.

He also stuck his head in the hat when he was digging for buried treasure. HHHMMMMM.....

You've never dug for buried treasure?!

Yes I have ( when I was a kid).

I just think its strange that he used the same " looking glass in a top hat" to look for the treasure.

Then God gives him " seer stones" that he puts in the same top hat and reads " golden plates".

Why would God use the same " scam" he was arrested for to now restore the gospel and the church? To me it seems Smith at least could of came up with something original. Just my thoughts...

I know its off topic , but i was just responding to your question. We could start a new thread if you would like.

I was just curious. I looked for treasure when I was a kid too. Hehehe. I'm not too interested in starting a new topic about it. Maybe some other LDS do, but I've never really been interested in that topic. :) Besides I'm getting off work and I'm only online at work. It keeps me from becoming an RF Addict.

A great description of what religions have done to humanity.

Experience briddled by the ignorance of simple books trying to pin down 'truth.'

What can be substantiated?
Physical data.
What can be called truth?
Empirical data.

The words of a book?
If grounded in physical fact that mirrors experience. i.e... dejavu...... prophecy is entangled energy (displaces time).

Should not truth be held to a higher standard?
Such that personal beliefs cannot be the guide to truth; 'witness only what is true'

All of this is the cause of the confusion of mankind...
And the cause of secularizations, conflicts and even internal rebellion (see the children)

We tend to minimize truth and turn it into something far-off and unbelievable.
See dark matter, dark energy........ or a 'rapture,' all man created ideas to describe phenomena unanswered by empirical evidence; fibs!

If you believe there is a perfect Bible out there available which version is it?

Or is it a mix of all the versions?

a perfect bible would be the unaltered word of God. since the bible says in itself (jeremiah 8:7-9) that it has been altered, it cannot be perfect. but it is indeed a good book, except the parts from paul or his disciples.
i would say a version with the original hebrew alongside the english is better than the typical christian translations. the jewish translations seem to get deeper into what is really said in the tanakh, whereas the christian translations tend to take many words and translate them the same when they do not have the same meaning.

peace

seems commnon sense would share that every word ever written was by a man/women.

So for a perfect book to be located then maybe an assembly of knowledge covering the history of time, leading to absolute truth combining the religions with the sciences, would literally be from God as all the contributers are also from God;

a book of true understanding from the evolution of knowledge;

a perfect bible

Mister Emu,
I don't know exactly what you are looking for as a perfect Bible. Almost all the new translations are far more accurate than the KJV. The truth is in all Bibles, it is just a little harder to find it in some, you have to look up references to find the truth.
I believe the Bible that is the most enjoyable to read is The Good News Bible. It is not as accurate as some, but it is so enjoyable to read, it is worth the extra time it takes to look up questionable things. This Bible is written so simply and uses such easy to understand words, and is written the same way we talk, that it is a pleasure to read. Sometimes I find myself chuckling because some hard to understand parts of the Bible are in such an easy to understand way.
I believe this Bible is out of production, so you will have to find it in a book store.
