Photogenic heroes and the right wing conspiracy

Have you ever noticed how hero status is created by those that go along with the powers that be?

Aung San Suu Kyi - is a great example here.

She is the leader of the National League of Democracy in Myanmar who has taken on the leaders of the country - and she is mercilessly paraded as a hero by most of the mainstream media channels in the West , simply because the ruling elite in that country do not adhere to the latest definition of democracy.

Let's face it, how many average citizens in a Western nation could actually tell you the difference between Myanmar and Burma or even where it is generally located in the World?

do you really think 'The Lady' would be so popular if she were unattractive and opposed the general views of the West whilst also fighting for democracy in her own land - I think not.

Why do the Western powers refuse to accept the official name of Myanmar but choose to use it's own colonial name of Burma?

The answer is quite simply, because they do not like the regime in Myanmar.

How far will the double standard, lies and hypocrisy go?

so , to sum up - yes, I am sure figures like Suu are great gals and the like but who really gives a rats?

any why must we be force fed this neo-liberal democratic-hero tosh?

Look at the Libya and Syria situations.

We helped Libya because we didn't like Gaddafi - he was supposedly a baddie.

We helped Iraq because we didn't like Saddam - he was supposedly a baddie.

but when we have riots or protests in our own countries we label the activists as degenerates, anarchists, or some other pejorative term.

If we are so keen on democracy then why don't we invade China or Syria too (because Assad is supposed to be a baddie, right?)

What are you rambling on about? I can't make heads or tails of your reasoning.

ok, well how much of a heroine is Aung San Suu Kyi really?

What has she actually achieved, and why is she made into such a high profile figure?

I don't even know who you are talking about, so how can you say we are being force fed?

She is the pro-democracy leader in Burma/Myanmar.

Myanmar is a military dictatorship , opposed by Mrs Aung San Suu Kyi - a Western educated housewife turned politician.

She is championed by the West because she fights for western style democracy in an authoritarian Asian nation.

I thought everyone had heard of this person, she is quite famous you know.

She is one of the darlings of the West, certainly in recent years at least.

Her claim to fame is standing up to a regime in a small underdeveloped country. She has espoused Western values in this nation and is also married to a British Oxford University professor.

So why is she such a big deal?

Are you seriously suggesting that politics plays a role in politics?
Oh, the horror! This must be stopped! When will this end?!?!
Never.

Just as a supreme guiding intelligence isn't need to explain evolution &
cosmology, a conspiracy isn't needed to explain politics & human drama.

ok, that is true.

but doesn't Suu Kyi remind you of a figure like Sarah Pailin.

ie: they have both become famous for being good looking public speakers and their politics relegated to just 'something else they do' - how can that be real democracy?

Not at all.

It never hurts to be hot.
It has been said of Massachusetts that its voters always took a good
hard look at the issues, & then voted for the best looking candidate.
Did anyone vote for Kennedys cuz their family was chaste, crime-free,
sober, intelligent & working class?

so how can that be democratic?

People should vote for the Party - not the person.

How can someone like Pailin, Suu Kyi etc.. really know how to run a country anyway?

No one ever said that voters in a democracy will be rational & intelligent.

People should vote for the Party - not the person.
I vote party (Libertarian) mostly, but sometimes a person becomes more compelling than party affiliation.

How can someone like Pailin, Suu Kyi etc.. really know how to run a country anyway?
We elected a prez with less experience than even Palin.
He never ran a business or even had a supervisory role.
(This is his first real job. And lordy...what a learning curve.)
Btw he's just as cute as Palin.....although not my type.

how about having a system whereby the party does not elect their leader until after the election - do you think that could work?

so in this case, you would have to vote for Party only.

I prefer to know whom I'm voting for.
We already have too many restrictions upon us.
No need to add more.

ok, yes maybe but don't you think that there is something inherently wrong with a system that causes people to vote based on the physical appearance of someone?

Take Arnold Shwarzenegger for example - as far as I am aware , he was first an Austrian bodybuilder then a muscle bound tv action hero trying to destroy John Connor - is that really the kind of guy that knows how to run a political administration?

what are his credentials specific to the job?
