Many authorities actually monitor the peer to peer file sharing programs. They are aware that
people are downloading music, but their interest is more in the users seeking "child porn".

Whether it be FBI agents or State police members, they do often use the program themselves,
and often they catch users by uploading a file (with a horrendous child porn name). A seeker of this file will start the download,
and the agent can then trace the downloader of the file with
techniques rather more broad than an IP or DNS lookup.

Now do you think they are really fussed about people downloading music?

Sorry just had to say my piece.

What about the used CD's you can buy from pawn shops? Those people are actually selling the albums for profit. Also, are all the kareoke singers stealing music by singing the songs of other people?

downloading music is a form of protest.
Protesting choice of music, availability, cost, choice ect.

Theres a reason why I dont go to a best buy to look for music. They dont have what I want. No privacy. I cant sample music before I buy it. I cant listen to a song when I have it in my head long enough to not have another song playing around me to confuse me and forget. I dont need to waste fuel to buy a song right then and now. I shouldnt have to pay 99 cents to download a song through a service that I have to subscribe to which only has a few songs i like on the service to begin with while that song did not come with a jewel case, cd media or creative booklet.

I had near 4000 CDs full of music in abouts of 1995. A flood destroyed most of the CDs. The film on most of the discs ended up peeling off and most of the books were destroyed. Maybe 60 of my 4000 CD collection survived. CDs that I couldnt replace, CDs that since then have not been published again. Let alone how many of the CDs werent made with good materials, so they would have film warped by now and would not be playable on most players anyways. Insurance didnt cover my CDs when the flood happened. Now I have almost everything downloaded that I had before, and I have it all backed up too. I cant believe that I can actually get sued for that. I cant provide any proof in what I owned and what was destroyed. 4,000 cds at full price was an average of 13.00 a cd to me, some I bought used, but a lot I had imported aswell(40 bux for a lot of cds) so 13.00 is a fair estimate. Maybe $52,000 gone. Maybe more now.. I had collectables that were never re-released. Oh, can I count my LP collection too? I had more LPs than CDs.

Im not going to ever feel bad for downloading music. Its publicity for good artists and Im still buying other things in return. I dont think many people have stopped buying music all together tho, if anything a lot of stats show that last year was a record earnings year for music.
So whatever money they lose? I dont know, but I will continue my non-violent protests on why I choose not to listen to the radio, why I choose to buy thousands of dollars worth of computer equiptment every year instead of thousands worth of CDs. And last but not least, I protest that I have a choice.

Crystallis had some good points there. Most music stores don't
have what I want either.

I don't listen to the radio. Why? Because after 2 hours of listening,
they may not have even played one song that I like. I would rather
listen to the songs I like, not merely "hope" that a good song is
played.

I used to be an announcer at a radio station. There they copy CD
tracks onto the pc, their music server, and play them off there
with a music program. There's nothing wrong with that :)
