A couple of questions:
  • Who made up that rule?
  • And is the social context the U.S., Europe, Great Britain, or elsewhere?
  • And how do you define those terms?
  • And how would you classify John Doe, adamantly supportive of LGBTQ rights while strongly opposed to liberal immigration policies, or his sister, Jane Doe, an impassioned advocate for socialized medicine while being harshly opposed to abortion in all but the most extreme circumstances?
  • And, finally, why would you presume that the "Political Debates" forum is a reasonable venue for such a poll as opposed to, e.g., "Journal" or "Jokes"?
On second thought, ever mind ...
It was my hope that someone would raise such issues and that we could have an interesting discussion about the nature of the political spectrum. That was my aim.

The OP and poll were intended to be a very basic prompt, to provoke detailed discussion and debate.

And yes, it didn't really take off.....

But then not all posts can turn out to be a great success.....

You raised some of those things but it seems as though you don't want to discuss them.

It succeeded.

Some posts aim at getting attention; others aim at getting clarity.

If there is a debatable political question that you wish to pursue, it might be better to simply articulate it, offer your perspective, and invite feedback.

Are you left wing or right wing?

You cannot sit on the fence and be a centrist you have to choose between either being a lefty or a righty :D

Personally I'm confident that I'm on the left.....

I prefer the four quadrant model as I think it captures more complexity than a simple left/right dichotomy. I tend to be "libertarian left" though leaning more in the center lately.

I'm grassroots populist right, I would say.

It depends on the issue, but leaning Marxist/socialist and being strongly socially liberal, I tend to identify more with leftist views.

This also depends on the context in which we're defining "left wing" and "right wing." An American or European capitalist may be off-the-charts leftist in the Arab world due to their social liberalism but solidly right-wing in their home country.
