Most will probably know what happened at the end of the Women's World Cup football final by now - where the Spanish FA president, Luis Rubiales, kissed a female player on the lips and apparently without her consent (her view) - given that such things are not expected by players and tend to be seen rather differently than mere hugging - with the latter not seen as that inappropriate.

So do you think he should resign despite his apparent defiant stance?

My opinion - yes, he certainly should, even if he misunderstood the reaction that this might cause and done in the heat of the moment.

There's difference between sexual (also known as lustful kiss) kiss and friendly kiss (which is often given to friends).
I have watched the video, and it was a demonstration of friendship and appreciation.
There was nothing sexual in it. It lasted less than a second.
It's like when you kiss your friend.

That said...a person can feel uncomfortable and awkward if they are even hugged by friends. Let alone be kissed on the lips for a second or less.
I think he should apologize and tell her he won't do that again.

But resigning is absolutely disproportionate to the seriousness of the act, which is clearly an act of affection. And not of lust.

" The Lionesses – who Spain beat last Sunday to win the World Cup – have come out in support of Hermoso.

A statement released by the England women’s team that was shared by several players said that “We all stand with you, @jennihermoso and all the players of the Spanish women’s team”.

The statement adds that “people shouldn’t need convincing to take action against any form of harassment”. "

" Hermoso rejected any suggestion that the kiss was consensual, describing Rubiales’ description as “categorically false” and saying the “conversation did not happen”.

Instead, she said, the incident had initially left her in “shock”, but she was now speaking out. “I feel the need to denounce what happened because I believe that no person, in any work, sports or social environment, should be a victim of this type of non-consensual behaviour,” she said. “I felt vulnerable and the victim of an aggression, an impulsive, machista[chauvinistic] act, out of place and without any consent on my part. Simply put, I was not respected.”

Hermoso added: “I want to reiterate that I do not have to support the person who has committed this action against my will, without respecting me, in a historic moment for me and for women’s sport in this country.”

She said that she had repeatedly rebuffed the Spanish federation’s request to make a comment that would justify Rubiales’ act and lessen the pressure on the football chief. Even so, she claimed that the federation had continued to approach her, as well as her friends and family. “I’m sure that as a world champion national team we do not deserve such a manipulative, hostile and controlling culture,” she added.

Her statement was issued soon after a joint statement that said the World Cup champions would not return to play for the national team as long as the leadership remained in place. Along with all 23 players from the World Cup squad, the statement was signed by 56 other female football players.

It also spoke of the impact the days-long saga has had on La Roja’s World Cup victory. “It fills us with sadness that such an unacceptable incident is managing to tarnish the greatest sporting success of Spanish women’s football,” it said. "

Do you mind me asking whether you're a boy or a girl?
I have never understood it, in these years. :)
Thank you.

Yes.

I even think it's crazy when women get lighter sentences than men for the same crimes.
Thank you for answering.
But I doubt American Feminists would have asked for a woman's dismissal, just because of that.
Not only I doubt it. I am pretty sure they wouldn't have done that. :)

It's the "defiant stance" that shows us that he has learned nothing, and that he intends to learn nothing. So of course he will not resign, and as a result he should be fired.

They won't be able to put the national team on the pitch till he goes; they won't play.

I think you have misconstrued this. He is in a position of power and not really a friend. And given he had both his hands around her head she was hardly in a position to make a fuss at the time. Although this is similar to whether an adult should kiss a child on the lips, and up to what age, but where we do mostly know where such comes from - and mostly it isn't anything sexual at all. In this case however, given his other behaviour, it most probably was something sexual or just simply intrusive. Just not appropriate and hence why so many are supporting Hermoso.

Perhaps this is relevant too:

"The kiss was the same I could give one of my daughters," Mr Rubiales said.
