Rest in Peace, Holy Father.
The Catholic world has been immensely proud of you.

.
RIP to the Holy Father. May God have mercy on him and cause His everlasting light to shine upon him. Amen.

I became Catholic while he was Pope. He was a great theologian and scholar, and I always got the feeling that he never really wanted to be Pope. I admired him for his defense of tradition, especially the Latin Mass, and for having the dignity to step down when he felt he could no longer fulfill his duties as Pope.

From Hitler Youth to Papacy: Life and Legacy of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
Not this crap again. All German boys had to be in the Hitler Youth, by law. It wasn't a choice. His family was not pro-Nazi and one of his relatives was murdered in their euthanasia program. He had no choice in it.

Even your own link says:
"After the Nazi seizure of power, Benedict’s father suffered a demotion due to his opposition to fascist rule, but after Benedict turned 14 in 1941, he was compulsorily drafted into the Hitler Youth. He was recorded as an "unenthusiastic member." Two years later, he was drafted into an anti-air artillery corps, then trained as infantry, but deserted his post in 1945 as American forces approached. He was briefly interned in a prisoner-of-war camp until being released at the end of the war."

Wow, what a Nazi.

The was the Pope I pretended to be as "The Pope"
in The History Channel discussion forums. I tried
to make him seem reasonable, human, & humorous.
Oh, good times.

What are your thoughts on his handling of sexual abuse cases committed by priests and the fact that he didn't explicitly apologize or admit his mistakes?

I don't know enough about his personal involvement to comment either way, honestly. I do believe that most of the reforms we have now were enacted under his papacy. He met with the victims, too.

As cardinal and pope, Benedict pushed through revolutionary changes to church law to make it easier to defrock predator priests, and he sacked hundreds of them. He was the first pontiff to meet with abuse survivors. And he reversed his revered predecessor on the most egregious case of the 20th century Catholic Church, finally taking action against a serial pedophile who was adored by St. John Paul II’s inner circle.
While blamed, Benedict fought sex abuse more than past popes (msn.com)

It's terrible when people don't have forgiveness for men who facilitated child abuse, protected the rapists and hounded the victims. I mean all he was doing was advancing his own career at the expense of sexual abuse victims. Just so sad.

There is a stark difference between Benedict and John Paul II who I think was more to blame for all the cover up. I remember well when the whole mess hit the public in Boston Massachusetts during the papacy of John Paul II. Then Cardinal Law, was called to a legal deposition concerning abuse, and instead left for Rome. You would think that with all the 'proof' against this man, there would be some accountability called for by John Paul. Well, there was not, instead Law was actually rewarded with a nice cushy position as head of a prestigious church.

The Popes have apparently known and have been covering it up for a long time now.

How many religions are like Catholicism?
And I'll just let you furnish the evidence to support your claim of all religions.
If we are supposed to generalize about Catholicism and cases of pedophilia...because of some cases of sexual abuse here and there, then I can generalize as well, about the United States, speaking of the countless mass shootings.

So...shall I say that all Americans citizens are potential mass shooters, because of just some cases here and there?

The Vatican has LONG (for centuries upon centuries) been an epicenter of suffering, abuse and misery. For so very long they have tortured and abused and killed people and called it holy, said it was god's work, and did whatever they could to downplay and hide their evils. In the modern days we know that at least for several decades Vatican leadership was covering up sex abuse.
And generalize about America and mass shooting? We have them frequently because people here tend to be stupid and moronic and refuse to acknowledge the psychology of it, including how it takes only one moment of emotions flaring to become an active shooter. So, yeah, that's basically a non-point that says nothing but words into the air.

Gotta be careful not to push the envelope too far as there's also a lot that the Church has done that is positive. Mind you, I'm not implying that this excuses the atrocities that were done.

You have the right to believe whatever you consider opportune about the Roman Catholic Church.
But we all can generalize...
