Popes visit to the UK

The Popes visit is going to inconvenience a lot of people.
It will cost the taxpayers a lot of money to police.

It will welcomed by, it seems from surveys, only a moderate proportion of British Catholics.

I would be far happier is costs relating to religious visitors were paid for by their own congregations.
This Pope seems to be the least respected in modern times.

It seems turning it into a State visit was the only way it could be afforded at all.
It will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

Pretty much how i feel although there are these which concern me most and what the Catholic Church are responsible for
  1. opposing the distribution of condoms and so increasing large families in poor countries and the spread of AIDS
  2. promoting segregated education
  3. denying abortion to even the most vulnerable women
  4. opposing equal rights for lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender people
  5. failing to address the many cases of abuse of children within its own organisation.
  6. rehabilitating the holocaust denier bishop Richard Williamson and the appeaser of Hitler, the war-time Pope, Pius XII.
All ofthese are a disgrace IMO

What I find particularly confusing is people's willingness to stay loyal and obedient to an institution with a long and persistent history of raping children and covering it up. That is their moral authority? That is who represents their God?

Exactly,Gods personal Vicar on Earth condones it

Many of the teachings of the Catholic Church are incorporated into most of the other Christian Churches, they are of course modified to suit the founders of those other churches.

I do not think it is the doctrines of the Catholic church that causes most offence. It is more their dogmatic attitude on sexual matters and contrasting lack of moral rectitude in the lives of their clergy that defines their failings.

I'll agree with that but i would add that even if the Pope felt the same as i do there is little he could do about it because of the position he holds

If the Catholic church was paying for Benny's visit then I couldn't care less if he came or not. However the long suffering British taxpayer is paying part of the bill, this is WRONG! We are suffering enough cut backs as it is. I hope everywhere he goes there will be very loud non-violent protests! Apparently even the Catholics aren't that enthusiatic about his visit, many of the tickets for the events have been returned as they haven't been taken up by the faithful!

He is a head of state and head of the Church of millions of people, i welcome him as such ,i don't have to like him or his organisation though. How come its costing so much ? do we pay when other dignitaries come or what?

I still don't see why Benny is deserving of a state visit. We don't have state visits of heads of other faiths!

I think the objection is it should not be recognised as a state visit, its costing so much because of the extra security needed as the Pope or Catholicism isn't very popular here, personally i object because of the reasons i posted.

I dislike Pope Benedict myself, but as stephenw said, I would not oppose to the point of protest or anything like that.
