Do you think it makes more sense to pray to the universe, the sun, the earth, nature, or even cosmic microwave background radiation (the oldest light in the universe) than to some imaginary deity?

depends on how you define prayer and what you expect from it?
Asking for stuff, while sitting or standing in a quiet place, hoping or believing it will become true miraculously.
Is there another way?
Where do you think deities came from?

I don't know. Do deities pray?
Do you believe this things have the power to deliver this stuff to you? and may be persuaded to do so by your praying?

These things have the power. I have no clue if they can deliver the stuff to me, but at least we know they exists.

It all depends on what you are defining as "prayer".
Focusing on God is in how your perception operates.
Saying he is imaginary is not lacking. A person must consider and accept what god is before he can be imagined or realized. The imagery captures the world of where one places the perception.
Energy is a great part of God ( in my beliefs).
I would not imagine praying to it or focusing on it. BUT if it is a conduit of which he or she reaches to interact and connect with me I will not fail to see it as a aspect og god.
