Same here in Brazil. Sometimes the religious cerimony doubles as a civil one, but it is still the civil marriage that gives one legal rights.

The Senate approved same-sex marriage by a vote of 33 to 27, with 3 abstaining, a few minutes after 4 o'clock this morning. Thanks Smoke and LuisDantas!
I had wondered. So the law is similar to that in the US -- civil marriage license = married often accompanied by religious ceremony.
Any word on how the Argentine debate is going, and what the anticipated outcome is? From what I read yesterday it seemed like the Senate vote was (at the time) too close to call.

Now, if we could only figure out how to get some of that wisdom into our own Congress ...
That said, I do hope he comes back and reconciles with the Catholic Church.
I hope he doesn't.
I agree. If a church wants to have policies or beliefs, it is well within their rights too.

The Roman Catholic Church has every right to do as they wish and people can decide if they want to join or not!
I disagree. It's not bigotry to point out institutional bigotry, and as long as we don't try, for example, to force a church to bless same-sex marriages, it's not intolerant to dispute their beliefs. What I do not agree with, (although I understand completely) is folks trying to tell other folks what they should believe.
Freedom of religion means all religions. Churches have every right to make their own policies and the people who rail against them are religious bigots.

Homophobia or religion bashing is ignorant. Both are bigots in my book.
I hold that the Catholic Church should change its teachings. I don't hold that the Catholic Church should be forced to change its teachings. There's a very significant difference.
Point taken.
However religion is an ancient thing. Expecting it to be hip will most likely be a disappointment.
The biggest reason I have changed my mind about homosexuality is, what one person thinks about something should not control another persons happiness. That is so wrong on so many levels.
I was invited to attend a church service a couple of months ago. The preacher was gay bashing. He said,"The Bible says Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve".
I was so offended, I stood up and walked out of that church never to return again.
That is not the Christianity I was taught to believe as a young person, where is the love for one another?
If he accepts the dogma of the Church
on gay marriage then how could he possibly
support it politically? After all, he would be
supporting something he considers immoral,
unnatural and abberant.
You cannot have it both ways.
I hope the RCC comes to there senses and reconciles with him. I guess I am just a dreamer.

Depends on what we are talking about exactly. You cannot have it both ways.
