Well, as I said, she wasn't the only one quoted in the article.
I'm sure there are other people whose relevance
depends upon taking offense at things others say.
Movie stars, gadflies, race baiters, politicians, &
failures to launch abound.

Well, there are certainly other ways one might express sympathy.
I find it 100% proper myself. It was one European talking to another European. To tie it in with racial issues that were a million miles away from the comment just shows some obsessed politically correct watchdogs that serve no positive purpose.

That's their idea of a horrific comment? I see no problem with it. We know he meant Europe has been relatively war free since 1945. He wasn't addressing anything else and to find a way to construe it negatively as a comment on anything else is disingenuous.

Yes. The EU has been at peace for 75 years

It's not so much in what others say. It's the belief that motivates the comment in the first place.

I don't see this as a case of political correctness. An example of PC might be Coca Cola's (or any other large corporation or establishment institution) diversity training, telling working class whites that they have to "act less white" (among other things). PC is usually practiced from the top down, where elitist whites presume to "educate" and "enlighten" their lower class counterparts. That's what makes PC so offensive and odious, but in this case, we see indications that the elite have the exact same beliefs and perceptions that they attack others for.

Exactly. It reminds me of Sarkozy when he said that miscegenation was something so positive that it should become an obligation in the future.
Looking at his wife, Bruni...it doesn't look to me his is an interracial marriage.
He did not practice what he preached.

Unlike in musical theory, there is no objective standard as to which offense is "major" or "minor", so if people don't care then that's entirely on them. Therefore, I would say the onus is on those who don't care about an issue to remove themselves from such a discussion to begin with.
