I ask because I anticipate anything anyone writes here as a pro/con of "religion" will be the opposite depending on that person's values or fail to apply to many religions.

Pros of Paganisms - don't have those cons you are going to list about "religion"
Cons of Paganisms - don't have those prose you are going to list about "religion"

:D

I am perfectly fine with people having opposing views.

The pros of religion would be to help people become kinder & more compassionate human beings. Doesn't always work out that way :)

The cons would be a tendency to be dogmatic and intolerant and thus judgemental of those who don't share your "truth".

Does that answer your question? I am sure more pros and cons could be listed ...

Cheers!

Most religions give people a sense of community (and often the support of a community), which is a pro. Many religions also give people a sense of that people outside the religion are somehow "other", and perhaps even inferior to them, which is a con.

What are some pros and cons of religion?
If people are connected to the Divine essence of their religion then it is positive:

O ye children of men! The fundamental purpose animating the Faith of God and His Religion is to safeguard the interests and promote the unity of the human race, and to foster the spirit of love and fellowship amongst men…Whatsoever is raised on this foundation, the changes and chances of the world can never impair its strength, nor will the revolution of countless centuries undermine its structure.

— Bahá’u’lláh

If not it can be negative:

Religion should unite all hearts and cause wars and disputes to vanish from the face of the earth, give birth to spirituality, and bring life and light to each heart. If religion becomes a cause of dislike, hatred and division, it were better to be without it, and to withdraw from such a religion would be a truly religious act. For it is clear that the purpose of a remedy is to cure; but if the remedy should only aggravate the complaint it had better be left alone. Any religion which is not a cause of love and unity is no religion. All the holy prophets were as doctors to the soul; they gave prescriptions for the healing of mankind; thus any remedy that causes disease does not come from the great and supreme Physician. – Abdu’l-Baha

As I've said and implied many times here, particularly in reference to Christianity, religions help people get through life. I believe many people need the security, peace of mind, hope, and sense of community they derive from religious faith. It's also an avenue of good deeds, helping the unfortunate and needy. That said, religion has also been a tool of hate, destruction, and control; people using it to justify despicably cruel and selfish acts. It also steers people away from reality and rationality, sometimes reducing them to unthinking mouthpieces of their theology. It can also foster division within a society.
