Proselytizing

Katzpur

Not your average Mormon
I few moments later I walked past the mormon temple i Copenhagen which i live right next to.
Luckily no mormons felt like saving me this day (not the right time of the year I guess), so I managed to reach my apartment without getting to know God.
Mormons don't feel like they have to "save" you since they don't believe you're going to be damned in the first place.

Why do people from some religion proselytize more than others?
Mormons proselytize because they sincerely believe that they have something worthwhile to offer you and because they believe that they are following Jesus Christ's commandment to teach His gospel. Most of them will not push you if you politely tell them you're not interested. Apparently some people are interested, though, because about 800 or so people convert on a daily basis worldwide.

It's hard to be too irritated when JWs and Mormons come to my door, since they are usually incredibly nice people.

When ever people come to my house I come outside. my dog pretty much keeps everyone from wanting to get in anyway. I hate when they don't talk to me and instead hand me a crappy pamphlet. It's like "hey, Sony has better pamphlets, and they still got hacked." why did I bother to step on my grass shoeless for you to hand me a pamphlet? stick it in the mail why don't you. anyway I don't bother them if they don't bother me.

If they didn't care about you, they wouldn't try to save you. Try to remember that, even though they are annoying, they are only looking out for your best interests (even if you believe they are misguided).
They only care about themselves, if Yahweh had told them the only way to heaven was to convert people to atheism then murder them, they'd be doing just that.

I live in America. I can savely say the "culture" didn't prolytzeries to me....

No...you could safely say the proselytizing did not affect you... but the "culture" proselytizes globally and is all pervasive....adults may be aware and resist...but children are highly vulnerable.
It is a sad thing to live in a rural/costal paradise with every Educational, Recreational and Occupational option available...and be surrounded by adolescents- caps on backwards under Hoodies, pants hanging below underpants...all thinking/acting like wannabie gangsters living in ‘the Hood’.
Lord....it would be preferable if they all joined the Mormons, JW, Hare Krishna....anything that raised standards of behaviour above the current sad comic gangsta rap opera.

...so its more of a statement on how decadent the people who accept such ways are.

Nah.....these kids are vulnerable and impressionable...just as stained glass windows impressed peasants who had never seen anything so bright and exciting so too the brilliant bright and exciting portrail of drug barron gangsters with all the cars and girls appeals to impressionable teens- and makes them decadent.

It is a proselytizing religion....one of the worship of the material...it is highly effective and it does not knock at the door.

I was once an LDS missionary and my experience was that despite the fact that the majority of people didn't choose to listen, genuinely don't have time, interest, or whatever it may be, if at the end of the day there was even one person that said to me, "I've been expecting you" or "I really need this right now" or "I've always wondered why you young guys give up girls, education, work etc (for many of us, in that order lol) to pay your own way through another part of the world. It must be important to you?"

Nonetheless, San Francesco d'Assissi has the best saying for proselytes and non, "preach the gospel at all times - if necessary use words."

Personally if I thought everyone was in danger and I knew the one secret that would save them I'd try at least once with each person to get them to see it. I'd probably use different methods than proselytizers of course, but to me the notion is the same. I only get aggravated when someone won't take "no thanks" for an answer.

I generally oblige "why nots," but often it's difficult for me since I'm functionally aphonic to explain since writing is so cumbersome and so few speak ASL... so I can understand a lot of annoyance there.

Yes.....They have been known to "go door to door" -

The Union of Belligerent Atheists or The League of the Militant Godless.

Society of the Godless - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And sometimes they did not knock, and sometimes they took the door right off the hinges.....and sometimes they took the building and the people away....and left nothing but the door.:(
Ok, ok, there are ridiculous people in the world, and some of them are atheists.
It is scary that some people would take a slogan like "Struggle against religion is a struggle for the five year plan!" seriously

Ahhh....You've met my boss then?

Well...Membership of the League of the Militant Godless actually exceeded membership of the Communist Party itself...and one could not be a member of the Politburo without being an atheist...so, yea, millions took it very "seriously"...
seriously enough to kill over.

" Between June 1918 and January 1919, official church figures (which did not include the Volga, Kama and several other regions in Russia) claimed that one metropolitan, eighteen bishops, one hundred and two priests, one hundred and fifty-four deacons, and ninety-four monks/nuns had been killed (laity not recorded)[41]. The estimate of 330 clergy and monastics killed by 1921 may have been an underestimate, due to the fact that 579 monasteries/convents had been liquidated during this period and there were widespread mass executions of monks/nuns during these liquidations"

This is surely a horror story. But i think you are getting a bit off the topic of proselytizing.

You take an ideology which demands that people be atheists, and which sees no problem in killing its opponents.
Are you implying that these people went knoking on doors and killing people because they where atheists?
Isn't that the same as saying that since the president of the USA is christian the christianity is responsible for everything the USA does?

So this morning was the 2nd time in 2 months I've received JW's at the door. Of course they try to be assumptive and try to read me a scripture from the bible, but I let them know that religion isn't something I believe in.
Then the "elder" one, they go in 2's, asked me why and I stated that I have to have evidence to examine and study to find out if something is true or not. Lol, "you can't see the wind" she says. "But it can be measured with instrumentation, unlike a deity."I respond back.
"You don't believe all of this (presenting the trees, grass, etc.) just appeared out of no where?"
"Of course not", I replied."Evolution takes thousands of years."
At that point she knew I wasn't an "average" person to debate with. She thanked me for opening the door and I thanked her for dropping by.

It's probably a good thing that I don't get JW's at the door. Just based on their stance on blood transfusions, I would've probably been much less polite than that.

I have absolutely no time for anyone selling a religion that kills children.

People can believe in what they wan't as long as they don't push their belives on me.

It's not only annoying but dangerous. People like that burn books (happened quite recently if you've forgotten :D) and people like that can hurt or murder another for not being a follower. I've heard a story that an evangelizing priest killed a man when the man said "Okay, I'll go to hell then." to get the priest off his back, never heard the sources though, heard it verbally.

I started thinking about the times people have asked me if I "know God" and I realised that it has mostely been Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses who has done this.

I'm sure that many other religious people do it but those two do it commonly, also do not forget Seventh Day Adventists.

Why do people from some religion proselytize more than others?

As of an ex-Fundamental, it is because they do really, extremely believe in Hell, and they do not want people to go there. They spent most of their life on learning religious things, and feared it and wanted to save people... That's what I got out of it anyways.

These people scare me, I remember one going around our town and we had to turn off the television and shut the curtains because my mom didn't want to talk to them. When the doorbell rang my heart felt like it sunk deep into glue xD.

Besides, don't atheists proselitize? I've seen many posts where atheists say there is no God.

Some do, but most are not saying "Don't believe in God, it's ridiculous." Actually, most are saying to have a good reason and use logic and do not place beliefs unto others, avoiding Dark Ages again...

Living where I do, two hours north of NYC, missionaries are extremely few and far between.

I once was home when a couple of Mormons knocked on my door. They must have been rookies. Especially once they realized that I'm Jewish, they didn't seem to know what to say to me.

One time I was approached (don't know which sect he was a part of) while eating lunch in the food court at the mall. He pulled the ole "Jesus was Jewish too" and went on tossing around old testament names, hoping I didn't know any better. So I stumped him with a question about Jesus' genealogy, to which he responded "I'll have to consult my notes".

And the other day I found a pamphlet in my door. Ripped it up and threw it out.

I'm sure I'm on the "Do not go to!" list. I see them around the neighbourhood, but they never come to my door. We have a welcoming Ganesha picture in the front hall. Maybe that's why.
