Putin signs controversial internet law

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
This is a clear sign Putin is tightening his grip and headed for dictatorship. Revolution is a reasonable outcome to this action.
Sometimes I think Putin wants to create a comeback to the Old Warsaw Pact days making a return to the height and past glories of the old USSR.

I do see why Putin wants to do it though in light of what social media has done by the spread of false information, aka fake news and blatant misinformation, and the ramifications by which social media causes dissent and chaos. It could be looked at as a measure to re-establish accountability for one's actions by some.

I'm certainly not advocating state-controlled media, it's a historically bad road to take, but I do see why it's being done although I think it's a rash measure because of what it could potentially lead to.

"Controlling speech that's negative toward race, religion, sexuality, etc. = bad. Controlling speech that's negative toward politicians I like = good."

Censorship is bad, period. It's telling that you think it's "understandable" when it favors your views.

This is exactly what Putin wants, a neo-USSR except without the socialism.

What....you mean the left in the USA who call anybody who does NOT toe the party line 'fascists,' 'racists,' 'hate signalers' and other delightful names?
Huh. I haven't really noticed much of that. What I have noticed a lot of, however, is conservatives referring to anyone and anything they don't like as "socialist", even centrists and other conservatives if they dare to question anything Trump does or says.

The problem with calling fake news 'fake news' isn't that saying so is false. It's that saying so is true...and the left hates to have that stuff pointed out.
Accurate and objective journalism is very important. What are some things that the media has actually lied about? And no, not liking what's being exposed doesn't make it "fake".

As well, it's not the conservatives who want to pass laws that limit free speech, now, is it?
I know this is a really, really old example, but do you remember the art piece "P*ss Christ"?

WHICH side wants to go after 'hate speech?" WHICH side encouraged the IRS to target conservative groups?

eh? Whatever happened to the attitude Beatrice Hall attributed to Voltaire:

I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it.?

Most liberals I know, including myself, support the 1st amendment and don't believe in criminalizing "hate speech". I can't really think of any serious politicians who do, either.

He already has a vice-like grip. He's basically already an elected dictator, and a popular one at that.

When you take into account his popularity plus the fact that the interests of the most powerful people in society are tied directly to him, revolution is highly unlikely.

I would be ready to arm myself should this happen in the U.S.

Don't you think that the days of popular uprisings leading to a successful revolution against large governments capable of cutting off your water and power, freezing your assets, running tanks through your neighborhood, and launching a bomb up your dog's pitoot from low earth orbit are over?

"Sovereign Internet". I like the idea. Yeah, we too need it. Without games, porn, Youtube, Netflix, FB, Twitter, WhatsApp, etc.
Governmental control of information. :(
I do not think it necessarily means that. It means removing what is not useful and retaining what is. Wikipedia should be a prime site, Reddit might not survive (I have been there once or twice).

If we do not hold to this principle, eventually none of us will be able to say anything without offending someone, and without some form of government retaliation.

Oh.
wait.

Forget the 'eventually' bit. That's happening now.

There's a parallel concerning control of the internet in the US. The right wants internet providers to be able to control their content in the sake of business. The left wants freedom of the information.

How does your comments support that specifically about the internet?

Have fun getting blasted from orbit, in that case.

You can chose to live subservient on your knees if you wish. That's your choice.

But you don't get to complain about it, because you chose it.

I'd rather die a free man than live as a slave.
