They don't ask for that much.At fault? Perhaps. One must remember that the older one gets the more difficult it is to learn a new language.
They just expect an English-speaking baker to have a Boulangérie-Pâtisserie sign before their shop.

Yeah, that is a bit much. I do not think that the reverse is true in Canada. There is no ban on French signs in English speaking parts of the country. They don't ask for that much.

Yeah...I was referring to that.Holy crap! They are nuts in Quebec. An Italian restaurant told that they cannot use the word "pasta" in their menu.

Quebec cracks down on English brand names, forces prominent French signage to be included
It is almost as if the French speaking Canadians want the English speaking population to hate them.Yeah...I was referring to that.
Hey...we Italics are Anglo-philes...unlike them.A country imposes a language proficiency test?
That's racist!
Ameristan wouldn't ever do that.
But I'm here to help our froggy immigrants.
To enforce a language to remain static, & free of foreignHey...we Italics are Anglo-philes...unlike them.
We do say computer ...they say ordinateur
Goodness! That's right up there with the Israelis! This one is worthy of a "flying fickle finger of fate" award. More than worthy.
Canada's Quebec province has denied immigrant status to a French citizen because she was unable to demonstrate adequate French-language proficiency.
Quebec bars French citizen on language grounds
"If someone who is French and born in France, going to a French-speaking university and doing everything in French and they are still denying this, it's nonsense,"
Despite passing a French test to prove her language ability earlier this year, she received a rejection letter stating that she had not completed her education entirely in French - including her thesis.

We should ask un Québecois...How French does one have to be in order to be French enough for Quebec? ("She's not French enough for us.") This is just too strange.
Just out of curiosity, does this disqualify her from immigrating to Canada entirely, or is it just Quebec? Does Quebec have separate immigration laws? Would this affect English-speaking Canadian citizens? Are they not allowed to immigrate to Quebec?
Like everyone else in this thread I think this is absolutely ridiculous. The Quebec government has a history of being extremely defensive when it comes to language. And this is just one more example of how stupid that can be.Btw... I am curious about Canadians' take

I hope this gets fixed and she still wants to come here.
As for Justin Trudeau, he is a true bilingual, in that he spoke both languages from early childhood. His father of course was a native French speaker, which would be obvious to anyone who ever heard him speak English.

My French is not that good. Are you bilingual, FP?
Because years ago Trudeau had difficulties speaking French correctly...maybe his wife ( who is une vraie Québecoise) helped him improve.
Kind of.My French is not that good.
I have no idea where you are getting this stuff about Justin Trudeau from. He grew up speaking French. But of course he spoke Québecois, not Parisian. Maybe that is what you are thinking of.
As an English speaking Canadian, I personally take no offense to it whatever.Kind of.
Btw we were wondering @Subduction Zone and I whether the rule of compulsory signage en français in Québec is considered inappropriate by English-speaking Canadians
