Question about dream belief

Herr Heinrich

I was wondering if there is a religion that specifically teaches that life is actually a dream. Sometimes I get the odd feeling that life actually is a dream. Does anyone else ever get this feeling?

Well, I remember being told as a child (when my family was Hare Krishna) that we are all souls in the Spiritual World dreaming. One day, when we have attained perfection or true devotion to Krishna, we wake up and realise it was all a dream.

But I'm pretty sure that this was a metaphor. In fact, it definitely is. What they should have said is that when we become enlightened it feels as though we wake from a dream. I think this is what it must be like when the covering of illusion is stripped away.

I agree with you; life often feels like a dream. I've thought the exact same thing as you, on occassion.

dream: a sequence of sensations, images, thoughts, etc. passing through a sleeping person's mind. (Webster's New World Dictionary)

Humans use the word "dream" to refer to what happens when a person falls asleep and has "sensations, images, thoughts, etc." The differences are that you can't just wake up whenever as in a standard dream and life as we know it is much more vivid than most dreams. Are you assuming that you wake up when you die? Then would you classify this life as a dream if this life assumed a vagueness after the fact proportionate to the vagueness that one feels when reflecting on a common night dream?

I would say that this life is real and as valid as the dream world but I would lend my support that this physical existence may be controlled remotely. In other words our bodies do not contain a soul it may remain in the spiritual realm. When we sleep the soul logs out and goes on "break", when the body awakes the soul logs in and continues to perform bodily functions. There doesn't seem to be a religion on this theory yet so if you want to start one, be my guest. But I will tell you we're going to need a bigger church.

Hi Xiao_Shu, there is a Hindu teaching that the waking state mind of conceptual thinking is 'maya' and is the furthemost from enlightenment, next comes the state of mind of dream sleep, followed by third state of mind of dreamless sleep and finally the fourth and transcendent mind state of Turiya,..a state of pure consciousness.

I've done research an experiments in Lucid Dreaming and to me the dream world is a lot more real and interconnected than most people realise.

Never mind I just read up on it. Kind of trippy in a way. The whole idea of being able to control a dream reminds me of the Matrix.

I think there are some. But anyway, we are studying about dreams in our psychology.

Yeah it is kind of like that. I've been lucid about a dozen times in about 5 years. I remember once standing in a forest with cracked dirt infront of me. When I became lucid the cracks in the dirt were more clear and sharp than I've ever seen in real life. I have a bit of trouble controlling the environment like making people appear when I want them. But I can explore wherever I want to go. I really need to get back into practicing this.

One day I will try to have a lucid dream. I think I'll wait until I have practiced meditation for a couple of years though.

Sometimes I think dreams seem to have more substance than life. Life is more impersonal and distant than our dreams in many cases.

It seems to be something that everyone does and cannot live without. There's more to dreaming.
