Why is it that my Mother-in-law, who is a vegetarian and a Pure Land Buddhist, will not eat onions or I believe garlic?

From a Hindu perspective (which is hardly followed anymore, I daresay), those foods increase heat and passion. Buddhism took a lot from Hinduism.

There's a teaching in Buddhism, but it's rare, that says you shouldn't eat the four pungent foods, which include things like onions, garlic, shallots, etc. It has something to do with the belief that they act negatively on the lungs.

garlic onins some not eat, /tradition/, some eat garlic onions & meat, westerners might do either.

At least that's what I gather, I'm more of a Taoist.

It's mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita also, to be more specific on Dharmic reference.

Or, I should say in a purport/explanation (Prabhupada)

I grew up Pure Land Buddhists and along with meat and eggs, the pungent herbs were not allowed. I always took that as being because monks and nuns back in the day didn't have toothpaste.... Ah the wisdom of a teenager.. Anyway those who are strict Chinese Buddhists tend to follow these dietary restrictions.

Aum Hari Aum!

wise lady :namaste

from the yogic point of veiw rajasic and tamasic foods are to be avoided
a satvic diet of pure foods which do not aggravte ones suttle energies is more condusive to a peacefull meditive life .
anyone following a regular meditive program hindu or buddhist will avoid such foods , the list should also include the use of overly strong spices particularly red chillies , all intoxicants and unclean things.

simply as these foods upset ones ballance
satvic foods are pure and healthfull , (unprocessed , un refined ) nutritious and full of goodness ,
rajasic foods are foods which overly excite the system , chillies , onion , garlic ,(caffine)...,
and tamasic foods are dark foods which cause anger and inertia , concidered un clean ,flesh , stale or old foods (not counting preserves made with satvic ingredients) overly processed foods . many also will not take mushrooms because they often grow in un clean places or eggs .

similarly many will take no intoxicants of any kind .

Heh, not here. Prasad offered at temple could put the spicest Mexican fare to shame. As far as vegetarianism, the Hindus I know don't even keep fasts. One woman said her idea of fast is 70 mph. Another one said to me, when I said I was fasting for Ekadashi "well you're certainly better than I am" as she scooped rice onto her plate. Yes, rice prasadam on Ekadashi at temple.

Of that list, the only thing I can say she eats is an egg from time to time but she was not eating them until here children go rather upset, one a doctor, about malnutrition concerns.

ANd the only thing she drinks is hot water
