(Yay! I finally get a chance to play around with bullet points!)
  • Chuang Tzu
  • Tenzin Gyatso (Dalai Lama)
  • Baha'u'llah
  • Czar Nikolai II
  • Cyrus II of Persia

Feathers in Hair

World's Tallest Hobbit
Hmm... This is a toughie for me!

The Dalai Lama. I would love even to simply sit quietly with him- he seems the sort to radiate beauty and kindness without even uttering a word.

The Librarian at Alexandria.

Terry Pratchett.

Dominic Monaghan. (Actually, most any of the "LOTR" cast would do, but he played my favorite character.)

Zuiko, who runs Cedar Rapids' Zen Center. She's a remarkable woman!

1. John Denver - i just imagine he's a blast at dinner parties...er, was.
2. Jesus - Could supply the booze (yes, i know, a very tired joke, but he's still invited)
3. Pinocchio - He must have a lock on lewd penis jokes by now.
4. Cheetah - People always want young monkeys at parties; i think the elderly chimps still have plenty to contribute to society.
5. Emma Thompson - just in case everyone else i've invited ends up being boring. And i think she's foxy.

1. My dead adoptive Father - to have a chat as an adult (see if we agree on anything as he was a formative character in my first ten years).

2. My real Father - to work out why the people closest to me feel he is such a big secret that needs to be kept.

3. Imam Al Ghazali - as the more I learn from him, the more I wish I could be his student.

4. Muhammad - to ask what exactly Gabriel told him in the context of the modern scientific paradigm.

5. Jeheshuah - as he was the prophet I was first familiar with.

(I'm presuming that the final three are allowed indoctrination and acclimatisation to the common 21st century if required?)

In no particular order:

1. Heraclitus
2. Lao Tzu
3. Emperor Showa
4. The Buddha
5. Ben Franklin

Why just five?

I imagine the conversation might include the nature of opposites, the various methods of observation, transcedental experience, human nature, and what's for dessert?

Why only 5? It makes it a tough question, and keeps my list from being about 12 pages!!!!!

Dessert? I would have too many questions for all these people listed to even finish my meal!!!

This would probably include discussion about (yes) transcendantal human experience, the nature of existence and reality, God, Nature, and attaining pure happiness

Following Christ
Fascinating thread! Frubals to you when I regain that ability in about 5 hours.:sorry1: Upon perusing the posts, I see lots of good choices with thought provoking possibilities. Not to be a wise guy:D...but I'm going to presume that I could have these people in the prime of their lives and that we were somehow able to communicate over dinner. Anyway...I tried to think of some people not yet mentioned:
  • Noah - Secrets of the Ark have long fascinated me.
  • Moses - I bet he could tell some stories.
  • The Apostle Paul - His letters seem to be the catalyst for much of the divisiveness in Christianity today.
  • James Madison - In Constitutional debates, we often talk about the intentions of our Founding Fathers...I think it would be neat to get it from the source.:)
  • Eve - I'd like to hear her side of the story.
When there are only 5 chairs, someone's going to be left out. Maybe next party.:trampo:

What's the reasoning with Vlad Tepes? Are there people amongst us who fancy dining amongst corpses? Oh, and I'd just like to suggest that if anyone does ever meet him and is in the habit of wearing a hat that they remove it in his presence? Unless you like the idea of having it nailed on permanently, of course...

Done here.
I find it impossible to invite just five, so I've decided to have both a dinner party and a cocktail party.

The Dinner Party:
1. My better half -- of course.
2. Laozi.
3. Sojourner Truth.
4. George Fox.
5. Bertrand Russell.

The Cocktail Party:
1. My better half, again.
2. Benjamin Franklin.
3. My great-grandfather, Jeremiah Barrett, whose acquaintance I'd like to make.
4. Spider Robinson.
5. Cher.

And what about Robertson Davies, Coretta Scott King, Harry Hay, Goethe, Schiller, Shakespeare, Flannery O'Connor, Shelley Winters, Geza Vermes, Gregory of Nyssa, Mahavira, Nicholas and Alexandra, Karen Armstrong, John Julian Norwich, Steven Runciman, Barbara Tuchman, Richard Dawkins, Helen and Scott Nearing, Robert Burton, Jason Momoa, Lauren Bacall, Queen Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great, Charles Darwin, the Buddha, Heloise and Abelard, Mae West, Lucy and Desi, Victoria and Albert, Lincoln, Harvey Milk, King David, Molly Ivins, Dumas pere, Rudolf Flesch, Elagabalus, King Laoghaire, St. Brigid, Edith Durham, Gavrilo Princip, Jefferson, Thoreau, Victor Hugo, and Ramakrishna, all standing out on the sidewalk with their hats in their hands? I should be allowed bigger parties!
