Questions about conversion

If you want to convert to the catholic faith:

How long (how many years) does it take before you can:
- Study to become a catholic priest (after a conversion)?
- Go into a cloister?

- Is it possible to become a dominican-monk, and then study to become a priest afterwards?

Hi!

You're asking a few questions here. Let's see what I can help with:

I don't think there's a set timeframe, but the common number I've heard from vocation directors is 2 years. After which, you may be accepted into a seminary or religious postulancy.

A cloistered order will look more closely at reasons for joining. A secluded life is lived very unique, I can hang with Tue Trappists for like a week before I have to get back to my friary and our ministries!

Dominicans, aka the Order of Preachers, are "friars." They are a mendicant group. Different provinces are different, but in the Mid West province there would be a push for a friar to study theology and become ordained.

Hope that helps.

Normally, if I have my facts correct, you have a year to be a Catholic through the RCIA. Then you have to get a B.S. in Christian studies (you'd have to see what the university classes provide within the degree itself). I think there is another four years of study before one is a priest. (Good link:Priesthood - Office of Vocations | Catholic Diocese of Arlington I'm sure all states are pretty much the same. I'm not sure outside of the U.S. though)
- Go into a cloister?
I actually don't know what that is.

Yes, I believe so. Not all monks are priests. However, I would check with the Dominican qualifications, they may mirror that of a priest but not completely--you can't give the sacraments (Eucharist, can't concecrate) Dominican Friars

To be a priest, there are a lot of qualifications. I'd research them if you want to go be a priest.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) typically begins in September, one evening a week and ends in Easter, with reception of the sacraments. You could fast-track if you can find a priest who can prepare you one-on-one, but as most of them work 18 hours a day, this could be difficult.

If you are leaning towards the Dominican Order I suggest you find out if there is a Third Order group in your area. It's a layman's order and it might keep you in touch with Dominican priests/brothers/sisters.

Monasteries may offer short term retreats (a weekend or a week) where you live, pray, and work with priests/brothers and you don't have to be Catholic.

Either you are called by God or you are not. If you are not, it's still your path to walk. If you are, nothing can get in the way.

I asked a priest once what is the first step to becoming a priest. He told me to attend Church, regularly, for one year to see how the Spirit moves me. However, I can't become a priest because I'm mentally ill; also you cannot become a priest if you have severe physical disabilities; and if you are over $10,000 in debt. You can join a third Order. (I was just mentioning that as my problem). However, try attending Church for a year to see how the Spirit moves you.
