Quran’s rules, if correctly understood, have not become dysfunctional

One of our friends here wrote something like below:

The rules prescribed by the Torah and Quran may have been useful among the Bedouins and Hebrews of the time, but their lifestyles were very different from ours…. Many of them are no longer functional. Some are outright dysfunctional.

Should we still abide by the norms of a culture long gone? Should we continue to follow rules when their purposes no longer apply, or have even become harmful?

Were the rules made to serve society, or vice versa?

For Torah; I leave it for the Jews and the Christians to comment.

As for Quran I would like to say:

Please mention just one specific rule that one thinks is the most appropriate for ones viewpoint that Quran’s rules have become dysfunctional.

Then, one by one, quoting the text of the verse on the issue with some verses preceding and some following for the context, please prove your viewpoint.

It is a science and religion forum.

Everybody is welcome to do it.

Having many wives is not practical. It foments having even more demography.

It is also unfair now that there is equality of genders, because women should have as much right to have many husbands as men to have that many wives.

It is not good that the woman should be "obedient" to the man by default. There is nothing wrong with a couple where the man makes the most decisions I guess, but only as long as there is nothing wrong with a couple where the woman makes the most decisions. This should depend on the specific man and woman, not on their gender alone.

PUNISHMENT FOR STEALING:

[As for] the thief, the male and the female, amputate their hands in recompense for what they committed as a deterrent [punishment] from Allah . And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. Quran 5:38 (Sahih international)

PUNISHMENT FOR ADULTERY:

"The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication,- flog each of them with a hundred stripes: Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment." — Qur'an, 24:2

“If a man commits adultery with the wife of[a] his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.”Levi. 20:10

LAW OF MARRIAGE:

“And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan agirls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice].” Quran 4:3

“And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.4For it was so, when Solomon was old” 1 King 11

SLAVERY LAW:

"And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe. And a believing slave woman is better than a polytheist, even though she might please you. And do not marry polytheistic men [to your women] until they believe. And a believing slave is better than a polytheist, even though he might please you. Those invite [you] to the Fire, but Allah invites to Paradise and to forgiveness, by His permission. And He makes clear His verses to the people that perhaps they may remember." Quran 2:221

However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)

UNCLEAN

“O Believers! Only they who join gods with God are unclean.” (Yaubah – 9:28)

MEN ARE SUPERIOR

“Men are superior to women on account of the qualities with God hath gifted the
one above the other…” (Nesa’ – 4:38)

There is no commandment in Quran/Islam to marry more than one wife; it is only permissible.

I think no religion has given commandment to women to have more than one husbands; not even any secular state.

So what? The rules still allow it, and it is dysfunctional.

Well, if you really think it matters, you can always get a paternity test. Easy.

It is my understanding that the Mutah is widely regarded among Muslims to be dysfunctional now.

So much so, in fact, that it is a major concern and even a source of major attriction between the Shia and Sunni sects. One of several reasons why they sometimes find themselves being accused of not being truly Islamic by the other sect.

This always seems to be the response from Muslims to the question of polyandry, I've never really understood why. It wouldn't be that difficult to ensure a particular husband is the father if that's what was desired, and easy enough to confirm with a paternity test after the child is born.

I seriously don't understand why this thread is in the Science and Religion forum. So this thread itself is dysfunctional!
