"Real Men" and "Real Women"

Whatever helps people who worry about such trivial things sleep at night.
I mean, the whole idea was invented so some people could arbitrarily feel better about themselves and their social standing, so I'm sure that's true.

The idea was not invented to justify actions. The actions justify the idea.

Ditto. That alpha male is a concept used by the self-important who vastly overstate their social significance, and who usually have to dispense with anything like research or science to justify the term.

Your science and research are questionable at best.

Your "feelz" is not considered valid science or research.

I'd accept questions better than vapid rejection. I already posted earlier links to why alpha male has never been a valid term, in humans or in wolves from which the usage mutated colloquially.

To be honest though, I can only see this going the 'what do scientists know anyway? They're just useless intellectual elitists' So maybe I should save my breath.

Do you find the concept a "real man" or a "real woman" useful? If so, how is it useful? And what do you yourself mean by a "real man"? A "real woman?"
I'm not offended by it. I assume it just refers to an understanding of what it means to be a man or woman, as opposed to being children in adult bodies. Or being otherwise delusional.

Being such an otherwise non-descript term, however, it can hide a myriad of biased and confused ideals about what "real" men or women are. So when confronted with the term, it is probably wise to ask for clarification, if such will matter to further conversation.

At best, it’s describing positive traits for anyone in a needlessly gendered way (e.g. “real men sacrifice for their families”). At worst, it’s a way of describing restrictive gender roles (e.g. “real men don’t eat quiche”), homophobia (e.g. “real men marry women”), or transphobia (e.g. “a trans man isn’t a real man”).

The few people I know offline who call themselves "alphas" tend to be "losers", to use a relatively polite term for it. I wonder if the same thing holds true for the people who call themselves "alphas" online?

It's a strange world. So often people are exactly the opposite of what they say they are. It's kind of like those in the closet, self-loathing homosexuals who really get fired up against LGBT folks and who make careers out of persecuting LGBT folks, and who are later on caught soliciting other men for sex in a public toilet or something.

I don't know whether everyone who thinks of himself as an "alpha male" is a loser, but human nature being what it is, I wouldn't wholly trust them not to be.

I only find it useful when joking. (And, I mean joking with a person that knows I'm joking and in a context in which it is expected to be taken as a joke.)

I do think it's funny to play with the concept. To me the idea that one could be an "unreal" man or woman is hilarious.

Revoltistan's national slogan nees some work.....
"It's where men are real men, women are real women, & farm animals are nervous."

My motto is, "If I don't fit your criteria for being a Real Woman, that doesn't make me not a Real Woman, but it does indicate to me that you what you decide is real is not what exists, but what exists in the form you want it to exist in. Good luck with that.

My motto is wordy, because Real Women like to use a lot of words."

(Well, that's not really my motto. I'm still working on it.)

Perhaps we can get a toofer discount at remedial motto writing school, eh?

@ADigitalArtist what I'm gathering from these (from what I can read) is that animal social functions - typically canine and great ape - aren't what was previously though where the "biggest and strongest" dominate. To clarify my own posts (it was really late and I'm fighting off illness) I don't disagree with that, but did with the notion that it doesn't exist at all. I'm also of a shared mind that the typical "alpha male" douchers are... well, douches.

I would consider women who are confident in their independence and individuality more real than those who conform to shallow ideals.
