So while I was banished from RF I decided to give Reddit a try. It didn't last long.
Someone had posted an innocuous picture of some small rural town holding a festival. Some noted the lack of diversity (most rural communities tend to be predominantly white), and claimed this meant that townsfolk were racists. I replied asking if they expected the townsfolk to kidnap minorities and force them to attend. This lead to users accusing me of defending racism. Another user stated that white people are weird. I pointed out that had they used any other race in place of "white", there would be outcry. This lead to me being banned, with "racism" being the reason cited.

I thought Reddit's reputation for being a hive of rabid SJWs was exaggerated. I was wrong.

I sometimes browse Reddit for some funny memes, although for the most part, I find it to be pretty much a wasteland.

The community and mods are pretty toxic.
I still keep an eye on the "free games on steam" subreddit, where they make note of occasional giveaways.

I've checked it out.
Found it uninteresting.
I don't understand why it's highly thought of.

It seems to get a lot of traffic, although there are a lot of people who seem to take it far too seriously, especially when it comes to upvotes, downvotes. I never really could figure out that whole system they use. They take the fun out of frubals.

Hahaha. Nope, Reddit is terrible.

There are some areas there that have decent tech info - google leads me there occasionally. Some areas are funny. Some as you found are toxic. There was even a pro-Trump area before it got banned.

I don't feel the need at this point to create an account there but from what I've seen it's like the internet - full of sludge with some decent areas.

Even as a filthy whiny “woke” leftist I don’t like Reddit all that much lol
Some subsections used to be fine back in the day.
Not so much lately lol

I'm liberal myself but SJWs are sanctimonious, hypocritical, vindictive witch hunters. They're the left's version of religious fundamentalists.

Excuse my ignorance of internet patois but what does SJW stand for?

I can’t say I disagree.

Some of the full blown “antis” became (or always were) just as bad if I’m honest.
Fell into that crowd for a while. Toxic folks

I've said it elsewhere but I use Reddit a fair bit for my wargaming interests. I mainly browse but occasionally upload pictures of my work or talk about modelling techniques and game tactics. Never had an issue myself and the only time I've seen politics come up is in response to Neo-Nazis in wargaming.*

I also enjoy browsing the Rimworld subreddit along with the [naughty word for poo] Rimworld Says subreddit. Both can be pretty funny.

I avoid any subreddits focused on religion, politics or videogaming (other than Rimworld) since I find they're generally just awful. Reddit can be very friendly providing you stick with niche hobby interests. Venture outside those niches at your peril though.

*There's a certain kind of person who looks at the dystopian setting of Warhammer 40k and completely misses the satire. Games Workshop has actually put out a couple of statements in response to it, bluntly telling Neo-Nazis that they aren't welcome in the hobby.

For gaming fans it is useful. Also its a contact point with game authors, book authors etc.

For computing I think its got some good entries. The downside is that the voting system makes it hard to find anything. Also its hard to navigate older posts, so it lacks some of the features that make stack exchange useful. I participated briefly in a couple of c programming areas. There were some very smart replies, but most of the questions were repetitive. "How do I make an array that holds different types?" was very oft repeated or threads like "Here is how I made an array to point to different types." I'd say pretty good overall but needs some reform in the voting and the presentation of threads.

For psychological support for ADD and depression etc. well I don't know. Its asking a bit much of a public anonymous forum. Its not smart to make yourself a target for all the whammy nutters that just like to experience your pain vicariously, and I think a good percentage of us humans fall into this category. "Tell me more (so I can make it hurt more to make myself feel better)." Its also not always good to comfort people. Sometimes it is, but comfort isn't a do-everything panacea for support. The peanut gallery public tends to think that comforting words are always the best, and they are not. And then there are times when someone trolls, and then there are situations where someone gives advice and it comes across the wrong way. The voting system also can seem either punishing or ridiculously lofting, and bad advice can get many votes. Therefore when I went on such a public site and talked about feelings or problems or read threads about them the answers tended to be questionable, random, uninformed or based in personal experience. A kind word was appreciated, but full social support was not possible in that environment. Its better than stewing in a closet but not what is needed by someone in need of help.

For jokes it is a good resource.

For fashion and hobbies it is better than pinterest.

It is a wolf's lair, people will eat you alive unless you align with their agenda. Doesn't matter if you make a valid argument or not. :)
