I have a strange story to tell regarding this, when i was a Kid freinds of my Parents bought a Cottage in a place called Penshurst which is a tiny Village some 40 miles from home and they let us use it for a week.
The cottage was near a River so i was excited at the prospect of Fishing for some Trout, anyway to cut to the quick, when we arrived at the Cottage i did'nt go into the Cottage as i wanted to do some Fishing so off i went.
Meanwhile my Parents and three Sisters went in to unpack etc, when i returned from Fishing in the River which was only 300 yards away my Sister said that she was not looking forward to sleeping in a room without a window and i replied "of course there is a window in every room."
This Cottage was built in the 14th century and was surrounded by Hop fields so you would be hard pressed to find it,anyway i told my Sister to come with me upstairs to the room with no window and i went straight in and tried to move a walldrobe and between the two of us we manages it,behind the walldrobe there was a large cloth almost like a curtain which i pulled aside revealing a door  i opened the door and inside was a very old bed and lots of cobwebs.
Obviously the first thing you would think is i just used common sense to work out that there was a door hidden behind the walldrobe except that was'nt the only thing to happen,i somehow knew the area very well,i knew my way to the nearest neighbour, the Manor house, all the old Pubs,i knew shortcuts through the woods and it was like i'd been there before.
I don't really believe in reincarnation but it was a weird feeling and even the Gamekeeper whom i met whilst in the woods could'nt believe i knew my way through the Woods and Hop fields so well,i'll never forget that summer or the Cottage,it was like constant Deja vous.

Children speaking of reincarnation is fascinating. Can anyone suggest any books on it?
My daughter has mentioned being here before now. I've yet to pursue it in detail. Though now I really think I should..!

Hey that's definitely interesting! Maybe you did visit the place in some past life, who knows? As someone who believes in reincarnation I think it is entirely possible.

The story that always stuck in my mind is one case of a very young girl who remembered some family and home in a completely different country. She knew very personal details about them inclduing where some possessions were kept in the house. There was a box with items inside that perhaps belonged to her and she knew exactly where it was hidden. Her family, I think with the help of the researchers, travelled to this country, tracked down the house and family and everything the girl remembered was true.

The strangest part was i knew where the well was even though it was completely hidden but even stranger was the feeling of being at home.

I have seen simmilar cases and they are difficult to explain away.

Could be that God was getting bored sitting in his living room watching you on TV because it had seen the program before.

I thought it was impossible to remember our past lives since memory is only a brain function and not connected to the soul?

For a long time, I've had a deep fascination with Japanese culture. I also picked up the grammar of the language really fast. (Though I don't speak it fluently, yet.) I also occasionally have dreams where everything ends in a bright light and explosion and I die. I also have a deep fear and hatred of nuclear weapons.

Maybe in my past life, I was one of the victims of the Hiroshima or Nagasaki bombings?

I'd say that of all the afterlife beliefs/theories, reincarnation is the one that makes the most sense and is the most likely, in my opinion. But I don't know the mechanics of it.

That is my understanding too. What generally carries are samskaras, impressions. But then the true yogis and mystics are able to remember their past lives through mystic abilities and some seemingly ordinary people have mystic insights. Maybe these few individuals are like the people who see ghosts or have premonitions or are psychic...I really don't know. It's an interesting mystery.

Yes, every now and then such stories appear in the Indian media, unfortunately nothing much is captured on video or documented.
Reincarnation is an accepted aspect of life here.

Can a person remember how they may have died in a past life?

Since I was a child I have had dreams in which I am a grown man driving along a causeway during a storm. My car quits running so I am forced to run along the road in the wind and rain, with the ocean waves splashing over the banks. I keep trying to time my sprints but I inevitably get hit by a wave and am washed out to sea, at which point I always wake up sweating. The particulars never vary; I am always wearing the same clothes and driving the same car but I can never make it across even though I know when the wave is going to hit. Today, whenever I drive over a bridge I get anxious and I won't go near a causeway.

I would like to know if there are techniques to be recommended that can help in past life retrieval or regression as I would like to overcome this irrational fear.

One of the reasons why I lean towards re-birth as a possibility instead. I don't personally adhere to a notion of a soul just to clarify.

I have a problem with reincarnation is if 100 people die only 100 people can be reborn, where do the rest come from

I would figure people aren't the only lifeforms around. The universe is a pretty big place, and our planet alone is ripe enough to produce an incalculable diversity of life, not to forget about the conditions and chemistry that enables it.
