Religion As Psychological Trauma

Do people use religion to deny what they know as a truth?
I am not exactly referring to a personal traumatic event that happened to the practitioner that made them lean towards religion but the similar psychological defense that people install when they are not comfortable to face a fact.

Is this something that has already been suggested or discussed?

Are there studies and statistics about this?

Can religious people be cured medically or psychologcally?

It is my personal opinon that some people may use religon as a way of explaining things they don't understand. Or even to put their faith in a god so that they no longer have to make any decisions.

And I don't mean all people that have religion...

What do you think to be the fact that people need to defend against?
Take reincarnation for example. Let's say that this it true. Pretty traumatic stuff, dying than being reborn to live another existence. Maybe this is something that people have to mentally block.

Take GOD. Maybe people know the truth about GOD but prefer to see something else because the GOD they know as truth is not the GOD that they were taught or want to be.

Is faith the mental block?

Now that I have the thread open maybe I should include atheists and other belief systems into the discussion.

Please keep in mind that I do not see religious people as crazy.

More like a coping mechanisim. When something bad happens they can simply say that it was god's will. Without that people may actually have to figure out why things happen and try and stop them.

Truth? Truth is relative. What is truth to one may not be truth to someone else. ;) And each person can only speak for him or herself.
