Religious entertainment?

So back in the 80's and 90's I listened to a lot of rock in roll, My sister was going to Church On The Rock in Rockwall Tx. When I was a teenager and threw away my Highway To Hell album by AC DC, made me mad lol. Shes funny too, she lightened up a little bit but not much but if I bring up the AC DC thing she will say and I still hate AC DC! LOL.

But anyways the reason I brought this up, was with all the Satan scare from the 80's and 90's do Christians still stand against secular music and secular entertainment. What would be the reasons to restrict yourself to Christian entertainment?

I as a recovering addict do think its healthy to listen to spiritual music, though I don't like Christians do I listen to Christian music now and then and also listen to Hindu music, namely the George Harrison album.

I think its healthy for addicts to tune into spiritual stuff. I like to listen to Unity FM which is a radio station by the Unity church.

But I think some Christians including my sister take it too far still. But no a days,she does let her teen age girls listen to boy and music that is innocent.
When me and my sisters were kids, it was before my time, but they listened to The Osmonds, The Jackson 5,and The Carpenters so.
So she has lightened up a bit.

I do listen to secular music and it changes all the time. I had a hard and fast obsession on The Doors for awhile after I quit the church and then a hard and fast obsession on new Kids On The Block. Christians at my Moms AA meeting use to tell me I should quit listening to all of it, I would wear t shirts with rock bands on it including a Rolling Stones t shirt, and they told me I was addicted to music along with Beliefnet folks.

I was not but I believe it was a part of my sexual and love addiction. SO today when I listen to secular music, I will listen to The Doors or New Kids and a bunch others, but I don't have any favorites, I don't get caught up in a favorite band over any other, just listen to a mic of different stuff.

I try to stay away from adult lyrics but here of late I have had issues with that, but sexually explicit lyrics are off limits to me.

But I don't believe it will send you to hell like some Christians do. So as a Chrisitian what kind of a stand do you take about music and entertainment and movies?

Love is only real when it is unconditional, and by that I mean even God's little book isn't relevant to it. It must beyond conditions, restrictions, or scriptural mandates. Few humans are capable of this in actuality... They could not love their spouse if that spouse became a murderer or rapist or love their neighbor in the way that if said neighbor said something off-putting they'd let it slide off their back. There are always conditions - conditions are the death of real love. Christians like these conditions as it gives them something to crusade against, but they miss the mark entirely.

I have no idea what purity is outside of the context of a bunch of worthless idealism related to various dogmas. The concept is relatively meaningless.

Your error is thinking there is something that is not spiritual - the entirety of existence is spiritual. Even the Atheist is aware of this... Something you might want to think about more.

No one even knows what God wants, but the better question is why would he want anything from you? Omni-potent, omni-present, can create anything he wants or needs, so what exactly does it matter what you do? Better yet, what if you were perfectly designed flaws and all and the things you do "wrong" are exactly what you were meant to do. More things Christians don't have good answers on..

I don't disagree with you. Like I said I privately am having to make descisions as well. As sill as you may the 70's were with the disco songs, I was a kid back then for some reason I have had an attachment to the songs from the 70's. KC and the Sunshine band they are Christians but some of their songs are sexually explicit some of the 70's music.

If I don't listen to all spiritual music this year Id like to get down to listening to clean pop and clean rock music again. I do not even to AC DC much anymore love them and no I do not think they will send me to hell like my sister does, they are pretty sexual though. So I have not even been listening to some of the bands from my day in the 80's like AC DC.

So i think it can be healthy to listen to spiritual as well. However I am not caught up in preaching about it or criticizing people to hell over it.

Listening to old 60's music reminds me of my childhood and some of it is innocent. I can listen to The Doors Riders On The Storm thats where I got my name from Riders, that song is sweet and innocent puts me to sleep and i love the sound of rain int he back ground. Some of The Beatles and The Stones and The Doors are cool and not sexual that way and I think that's fine.

I had one CD 1 of The Doors so I could listen to it at night. When I told my youth director he and the singles director got all over me about it said they were going to teach me about the right kind of music.

That is absurd, so yea I think you can go over board. I got obsessed with The Doors after that, I still listen to them because a lot of their music is clean, but I don't get obsessed over one group anymore.

I also like Tommy Page and The Shondell's is that his name? No but he performed Crystal Blue Persuasion Crimson and Clover I like those songs too some of his stuff from the 60's. Tommy James!!!!!

I like the 50's too, love Elvis, love Buddy Holley both of which were Christians.

So I mean there's plenty to listen to that's clean and upbeat without having to listen to strictly Christian music all the time.

Well this is true and I do not believe I have to listen to Christian music to hear spiritual music. I like Riders On The Storm which is where I got my name from and I think its spiritual.
Have you heard Night In White Satin? I was born in 1967 when it came out, when I was 5 in 72, they re released the album and it was on radios a lot.

Anyways when I was 5 I use to think that when they were singing I Love You Oh yes I love you, I use to think it was God telling me he loved me. So yea lots of good spiritual songs that are not Christian.

I see a wonderful person on a path to find who she really is. We all struggle with this life, you are not alone, we are here to help each other as if we are all the same family.

I was born in the 50's and also love music from the era you have noted. I went to discos and live concerts, I did it all

I had not found God at that time, but I can look back and see that it all leads to the choices we have to make today, right now and then in the future.

There is a load of great Movies, Songs and entertainment that is appropriate. It is the virtues we are after, not the vices, that do not have Christian on the tag! Christian means follower of Christ. Christ means 'Anointed One'. Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit is best explained as all the virtues. Thus a true Christian is a follower of all virtues.

I have come to consider that we are but one Human Race. I see we are all connected by our human mind. What I think and do can cross to others. If a person sees this as a weird idea, then look at the study of trees where it is now known that vast forests communicate with each other.

So if I realise that listening to or watching immoral things, act violently or play violent games, will project to others, why would I choose to do this?

I see we are what we think and then do. Thinking inappropriate things means we have the potential to be that thought.

It depend on where music takes you. My church said "Jesus Christ Superstar" was sacrilegious.Old thought.

Personally. I find a heavenly feeling in Classical, New Age and Moody Blues style music.

I feel rest assured some Christians may not believe I get into Christian music or are surprised that I listen to some of this music which comes fro conservative Christian groups like Stryper is.

However if it is uplifting and spiritual even though I may not agree with their politics or they're brand of Christianity, it really doesn't matter.

If its uplifting and good music Ill listen to it.
