Religious Nones?

I don't consider myself non-religious, although I am fiercely non-theistic, so I don't actually know whether this DIR is "mine". Therefore, no further comment from me here.
Actually, I wasn't clear on what directory I was in, so I probably shouldn't have commented either. Maybe I should delete my original post but with three Likes on it, my ego won't allow me to delete it.:) I'd rather the mods order me to ten years of forced labor.:D

Based on the DIR being 'non-religious' and with the more liberal definition of 'religion' only atheist and agnostics should post here. And not even Buddhist atheists.

Is that an offer? We could use some sla... I mean, no sweat. Between the likes and post #21 above I would say that you are all-ok.

Got me there. But I am still allowed to post respectful questions.

I claim the privilege granted by post #21, though.

if you had to pick a religion which would you pick and why?

Anything that I could bend properly into shape without too much trouble. The usual suspects (beyond Buddhism) are Taoism and Hinduism, but most anything that is not Abrahamic nor too theistic could be considered. Paganism has grasped my attention slightly recently. I sometimes wish I had been born Japanese to learn about Shinto from the wolf's mouth. And I sure wish I had the opportunity to know Judaism and Sikhism (despite both being monotheisms) from up close.

That said, I am happy with the Buddhadharma. But I do like religions and am deeply disappointed that so many of them lose their ways into glorification of scripture and theism. Everyone deserves better.

What would be the ultimate deciding factor? (Example, ideology vs values.)

How good are the religion's tools for correcting its own course.

UU, probably.

I tried attending a UU congregation for a while. I didn't have any disagreement with their beliefs, but I just didn't find the experience compelling enough to get me out of bed on a Sunday morning.

If I am non-theistic and non-religious, why would I arbitrarily pick something that I do not believe in?

I think some people really like and embrace the "flavor" without taking in or indulging with any aspects concerning belief.

One of those where everyone donates money to build me a mansion and all the beautiful women take turns to be my “wife” for the day but without the mass-suicide or deadly siege at the end.

Seriously, if I thought there was any form of religion (existing or not) that I felt would be beneficial, I’d be following it already (even if I needed to invent it first).

Hmm I think the most important is what it would offer. For example charity toward less fortunate people, community building is a weak spot I have. I doubt my values would change too much no matter what I believed so I think it would have to be pretty tolerant of race, gender etc.
