Religious Studies Major

Hey guys! It's been FOREVER since I've been on but I've been busy. I hope all is well :)

Anyways, I am right now thinking about making religious studies my primary major. I was wondering if their is anyone on this forum in undergrad or postgrad who is/was a RS major. If so, what have done with your major or plan on doing with it? What have you found rewarding about it?

Hi X, since you are posting this in the "General Discussion" sub-, it seems that you want a broad range of views, is that the case ?

May I ask, why are you considering a RS major ?

I would say because religion is something I find fascinating and I am very passionate when it comes to learning it. I feel like RS could potentially have a lot applications and I could go in a lot of diff directions but I just want some ideas and input.

I intended on becoming a RS or Philosophies major but there is nothing to do with such academic endeavors simply. Even becoming a lawyer is not worth it anymore. Your best bet is becoming a book writer with such a degree

I am guessing that your favorite academic pursuits then relate to: reading, writing and verbally communicating. Is that the case ?

Mainly the first two, yes. I am not a very articulate/fluent speaker

Is this statement from speaking with people who have graduated with such a BA?

I know of 2 individuals who have nothing with a BA in philosophies and 1 person headed down the RS road. Even my philosophies professor discourages having philosophies as a major.

This is very good advice.

With strong reading and writing skills, you may want to consider some fields other than RS. Three possibilities are law or business or economics.

If you are decided on RS, the two logical career options might be Rabbi or college faculty. A Ph.D. is generally required for college faculty.

For all of these fields articulate/fluent speaking skills are required. You will need to work on this.

Well I was thinking something along the lines of getting a BA and then pursuing one of the following:
-Academia
-Social Work
-International Studies

I have been thinking about the Rabbi option but IDK how good the option is for me as it would be quite a leap.

I know some of my ideas seem not 100% relevant to RS but I think it would be a unique combination and when I spoke with the chair of my univ's dept. he said he has had students go a bunch of diverse places (including med school).

I hold similar opinions. Things like religion and theology make good platforms for literary careers but to be involved in such things you must be very ambitious which I am not.

Hey, I'm in in university right now, finishing up my degree after a prolonged health related absence. I'm going for medicine eventually, although I switched from going for primarily research. I think your idea about becoming a rabbi is pretty cool. RS would give you a unique perspective to share with others in such a role, I think.

Other than that, maybe you could try a scholarly/literary occupation, perhaps writing books, as others have suggested. But I don't know too much about the field.

Wish you the best of luck!

:D

I was originally, honestly you should change majors. You have about 1 option with it which is to teach at the college level.

Law is in a downturn, but will come back. There are 3,000 years of history to prove this. ;)

The problem is that there's people getting their education and deciding what to do right now.
