Religulous

Did anyone see the movie yesterday? I did, and thought that it was a wonderful expose on the silliness of the myths that we label as religious truth. He states that religions must die for humanity to live, which I happen to agree with. If I were a religious irrationalist, I may be offended by some of the material in this film. Although Maher didn't go out of his way to make the religions look stupid and childish, their answers to his simple and logical questions make it all seem rather humorous and unnecessary. I would recommend this movie to everyone, especially those that are fed up with the idiocy of religious thinking and the people of the world that see religions as one of the most dangerous agenda oriented markets out there. As Maher makes rather clear near the end of the movie, at the time the Bible was written, mankind did not actually have the power to wipe mankind off of the face of the earth. Indeed, self-fulfilling prophecies are a scary prospect for the future of mankind unless we stand up and make our voices heard....

Sounds like Rick Mercer's "Talking to Americans"... oops, I mean nationalism irrationalists.

I'd see the movie out of curiosity.

I never will understand the mantra of "Religion must die". *sigh*

In all fairness, I don't think that's what the movie is about. I am hoping to go see it today, actually, and then I'll have a better idea, but from what I've heard from Maher so far, it's nothing like what Unitynow presented.

Can anything Bill Maher does be taken seriously? He's a muppet, who will no doubt guffaw his way through an uncomprehending "analysis" of Religion.

I like Bill Maher, but this just seems like a movie geared towards showing how "stupid" religious people are. I think I'll pass.

I'll watch the movie for entertainment and the perspective.
Im sure I'll be ****** off by who Maher chooses to represent Judaism because of the movie's agenda, despite the fact that im a secular Jewish person.
but im sure the movie will deliver its good moments.

Maher will not be saying what hasn't been said ad nauseum since the first disputes between Christians and pagans (or indeed Jews and pagans). Perhaps Maher can make the same old, tired arguments a bit more entertaining, but this movie will be about as intellectually stimulating as a sharp blow of a ball peen hammer to the crown of the skull.

It might be interesting, but I probably won't put it very high on my list of film priorities for the same reason I don't bother reading Dawkins. I don't need any additional justification for my non-theism. I'm already busting at the seams. :)

There is a difference between "religion must die" and "religion shouldn't be used as a substitute for thinking."
True, but from what UnityNow101 said, that is not what this movie is advocating.

Which is why I said I don't trust UnityNow's version. I've seen interviews with Maher about it, and that is far from what he is advocating. Unfortunately I didn't get to see it today, but when I do, I'll be able to comment more. For now, from what I hear, it's not just for atheists and agnostics (Maher himself is an agnostic), but for everyone. Maher is of the opinion that atheists are in the same boat as theists, and supposedly that comes out in the film.

Maher is not attempting to get into the debate of whether or not religion is true, or which is better between atheism and theism. He is just fascinated with people's knowledge or lack thereof of their religion and some of the questions about their religion.

I expect some of it to be the same tired subjects that have been done to death here and elsewhere, but the main point of it is how amusing people's lack of knowledge is. It's like when the late shows go out on the street and ask people easy questions about America or some other basic subject and the amusing part is the stupidity of the people in their answers.
