Reza Aslan and Fox News

One can hardly fault Aslan for being prepared to deal with an interviewer, though. Nor for being aware of typical Fox behavior, or for playing within the established parameters to get publicity for his book.

I mean, it is not like he had any duty to avoid such publicity, or misled anyone into believing he was not seeking publicity.

Exactly. Everybody who is trying to hustle a book will snap up any and all media appearances available to them. They don't go "ooh, I know, I'm just going to do Fox news and hope I get interviewed by an ignorant, idiotic anti-Muslim bigot! Then the interview will go viral!" He got lucky, that's all.

Good points.

Like I said earlier: 'Well played Aslan'.

Actually, an Iranian-American scholar who writes a book about Jesus knows exactly what's on the menu when he goes on interview in Fox. And like I said, it's an observation not a judgment. I happen to swallow books that Aslan writes whole. One of his books about the history of Islam is some of the best I've read for the layman.

I'm sure they do. But to assume it's considered any more than one opportunity for publicity among an endless list of media appearances is kind of ignorant, IMO. In general, authors will talk about their work anywhere, to anybody, hostile or friendly. There's no such thing as bad publicity a far as publishing is concerned. Despite Fox's low standards, I'm sure he could never have guessed this "debate" would be THAT stupid. All she had to offer was "but you're a Muslim!" and she hadn't even read the book. That's an absurdly low level of discourse, even for Fox.
