By happy coincidence, we are homeschooling our granddaughter this year and yesterday was the discussion of "what year is it," which included comparing the Gregorian calendar with the Jewish, Chinese, Islamic and other calendars...she realized that one of her friends is Jewish as was going to have a holiday happening today!:)

Cheers on homeschooling your granddaughter and teaching her about different people's different calendars!

I guess you've already told your granddaughter that the Jewish people are entering the year 5784 this evening at sundown. Here's something else that you can teach your granddaughter pertaining to the number of this upcoming year.

In writing the Hebrew date for a year, the 5000 is often left off. So the year of 5784 is represented as 784 (תשפד). The Hebrew letters used to write 784 add up as follows: Tav (ת) 400 + Shin (ש) 300 + Peh (פ) 80 + Dalet (ד) 4

In gematria (a Jewish system of numerology), 784 also represents the Hebrew phrase Ahavat Shalom (אהבת שלום), meaning "Love of Peace" (all of the Hebrew letters in that phrase add up to 784).

Therefore, let us all not only hold optimistic expectations for this being a coming year of peace, but let us all do what we can to actively promote a love of peace in whatever way we can.
