China, Russia and Iran to hold joint naval drills from Friday

BEIJING (Reuters) - China, Iran and Russia will hold joint naval drills starting on Friday in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Oman, China’s defense ministry said on Thursday, amid heightened tension in the region between Iran and the United States.

China will send the Xining, a guided missile destroyer, to the drills, which will last until Monday and are meant to deepen cooperation between the three countries’ navies, ministry spokesman Wu Qian told a monthly news briefing.

The drill was a “normal military exchange” between the three armed forces and was in line with international law and practices, Wu said.

“It is not necessarily connected with the regional situation,” he said, without elaborating.

The Gulf of Oman is a particularly sensitive waterway as it connects to the Strait of Hormuz - through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes - which in turn connects to the Gulf.

The drills are also coming at a time of fraught tensions between the United States and Iran.

The US is sending a carrier task force to the region in response.

Washington (CNN)The United States is deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force to the Middle East in response to a "number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings" from Iran, US national security adviser John Bolton said Sunday.

A US official with direct knowledge of the situation told CNN the threats were against both US maritime and land-based forces in the region. The deployments are aimed specifically at deterring any Iranian military actions, the official added.

In a written statement released by the White House, Bolton said the US was deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force to the US Central Command region in the Middle East "to send a clear and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime that any attack on United States interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force."

This seems like an ominous development. Is it worth going to war with China and Russia just because certain US leaders have some kind of grudge against Iran? We don't need their oil, as our own domestic production is sufficient to supply our needs.

On the other hand, if Trump wants to start a war, this is the perfect opportunity.

Not sure if you read the article. It seems that Iran has made threats against shipping and troops in the area, this is why our defenses are being beefed up. The article also says this deployment has been in the works for a while.

We don't need any troops or shipping in the area. What do we need to protect there?

I find it humorous that our response is to send carriers out to point guns at them. :D:D:confused:

WTF..?

Yeah, even though I find the whole posturing thing humorous, I think we don't really have a choice considering the primal tendencies in those who are teaming up in the East.

...We have to stoop to their level of communication, unfortunately.

I never understood why they called it a cold war, it always seemed a little warm.

No shots were eve fired between us and Russia during the time. I can tell you from experience that the Russians didn't mind playing "chicken" with our aircraft carriers.

Can't remember us taking out a tanker from another country on international waters.
But we did overthrow their government (1953), attack their
uranium processing fcility, attack them militarily (by proxy,
using Iraq), & shoot down their commercial airliner.

If they'd done any one of those things to us, we'd be
screaming bloody murder, & carried out Hillary's threat
to end their existence. Our double standard is the
most heinous hypocrisy.

It's a poor one.
Joint exercises go on all the time.
It's really about posturing & chest puffing.

Or maybe stick waving and saber rattling.

I think what will end up happening is that the US ships will have target practice, but the captain of the ship towing targets will get distracted by having to reprimand a sailor for having his shirt tail hanging out. This will cause the ship to steam in a circle and cut their own tow cable, setting the target adrift. He'll also accuse the Russians of stealing his strawberries, at which time he'll open fire and start WW3.

Well, they're going on exercises, so we're going on exercises, too. China and Russia have had a number of joint exercises in recent years. They seem to be getting more and more buddy-buddy.

I also recall a recent report by military experts which suggested that if the US had to fight both Russia and China, we would lose.

This leaves us with two choices: Either we have to bolster our military to several times what it is now (putting the country on a total war footing), or we should stop saber-rattling and let the rest of the world solve its own problems.
