Russia threatens 'military and political consequences' if Finland, Sweden try joining NATO

Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned against other countries attempting to join NATO after Russia started a war with Ukraine Thursday.

“Finland and Sweden should not base their security on damaging the security of other countries and their accession to NATO can have detrimental consequences and face some military and political consequences,” Zakharova said in a viral clip of a press conference.

Maybe it's time for NATO to say that a military attack on Finland or Sweden will be considered an attack on NATO.

Putin has to be stopped now. I hope that Ukraine with help from white-hat hackers can stop him before the war spreads.

I looked the man (Putin) in the eye and saw ... the enemy

But, I don't understand....W. Bush said something to the effect that Putin had beautiful blue eyes? Don't beautiful blue eyes prevent someone from starting a war? Apparently, W. Bush thought so. (Source above).

Putin was head of the now defunct KGB (replaced in 1991, it was the Soviet's top espionage agency).

Playing devil's advocate for Putin, NATO surrounded Russia by allying with surrounding former Soviet satellites, and Putin thought that he had an agreement with NATO not to. (has anyone noticed that NATO sounds like "not to)?" I understand that Putin tried going to the UN and appealing elsewhere for some help with NATO, to no avail. Apparently Putin felt trapped.

Still, Putin seems to be a liar (blue eyes or not), because he said that he didn't plan to invade the Ukraine. Biden's intel clearly showed tank movement days prior to the recent 2022 battle. However, I understand that the Russo-Ukrainian war has been raging (albiet cooly) since 2014.

Or...Putin could try being friendly with the neighboring nations, so they won't feel a need to join the alliance to protect themselves...just sayin'

Can't blame Russia. We feel the same way when China tries to hem us with militarily significant treaties with our neighbors. US felt the same when Russia talked of bases in Cuba. I am sure Sweden and Finland recognize Russia's concerns.

It seems like threatening them should only push them towards NATO.

Also seems like that countries might join a mutual defense pact against your unwarranted aggression should only upset you if you plan to utilize unwarranted aggression against them. If my neighbors had a "We'll all help if Mister Emu does a home invasion against one of us" league, I'd just laugh them off as paranoid and maybe a bit insane. I wouldn't rage and threaten to invade anyone's home who was thinking about joining it.

Seems like Putin is off his meds. Definitely one sandwich short of a picnic.

Yeah, Seeker of White Light, Russia alone cannot to be blamed, when NATO wants to put nuclear-capable forces on its borders. Politics is give and take, it is a game of balance. The war was started when the former Soviet regions were welcomed in NATO.

They are welcome to any action they deem necessary. Only that Russia has made its position clear that they would not like it.

Why didn't they let Russia in too, then?

Because of Russia history the past years 2014-2022 Nato has every right to put armed forces on their members borders. And since Nato is not an attacking force, they are not a danger for Russia. But Russia has now become a danger to all of Europae.

So, what do you do? Throw taunt at a bear? NATO can certainly put its forces on Russian border. They have the right. Try that. Perhaps that will contain Russia.

Putin knows if he touches a Nato member he starts WW3 and honestly I do not think he want that, so he target non members next to Nato.

Only if Russia attack within borders of Nato will they fire back

Russia has always regarded NATO as the enemy, that's why the Cold War went on for so long. Why on earth would Russia want to join the opposing force?

When WW2 ended, Italy and Germany lost the war and entered the NATO.

So...Russia lost the cold war...and was supposed to enter the NATO too.

Why didn't they let her in?

Russia and surrounding states had lost around 25 million people in the second world war, when the Nazis on their borders, broke the diplomatic treaty they had with the USSR, and tried to wipe out the remaining people. Soviet appeasement and diplomacy did not work with the Nazis to their peril.

NATO, which saw the U.S.S.R as its main foe, should have been dismantled after the collapse of the U.S.S.R, and the embracing of democracy by the eastern bloc.

However NATO, started projecting Russia as a bogeyman out of past habit, and probably to keep swindling gullible taxpayers of their money. Continued attempts by NATO to encroach into border states of Russia heightened Russian insecurities in this regard, still kept raw by the memories of the destruction caused by the Nazis, and which is remembered every year on Victory Day (May 9).

NATO wants the border states of Russia in its membership. Obviously this is interpreted as a threatening gesture , which has played havoc with growth of democratic institutions in Russia , as Putin uses these sorts of external threats and paranoia of invasion to consolidate his grip on the Russian government through hypernationalist propaganda.

NATO seems to be keen on getting Ukraine as a NATO member. Why can't it get Russia as well as a NATO member, and give it a privileged status on accordance with its technological and military capabilities !!! This would give Russia and Russians a sense of security, and would have avoided all these issues that had cropped up after Ukraine showed inclination to join NATO.

But of course, if Russia becomes a NATO member, then there would be no bogeyman to be scared off, and there would be no need to spend so much money on NATO operations, and that would be a major tragedy for the military-industrial complex and corporates that need the money to finance their lavish lifestyle.
