Russia threatens Sweden and Finland

Russia and surrounding states had lost around 25 million people in the second world war, when the Nazis on their borders, broke the diplomatic treaty they had with the USSR, and tried to wipe out the remaining people. Soviet appeasement and diplomacy did not work with the Nazis to their peril.

NATO, which saw the U.S.S.R as its main foe, should have been dismantled after the collapse of the U.S.S.R, and the embracing of democracy by the eastern bloc.

However NATO, started projecting Russia as a bogeyman out of past habit, and probably to keep swindling gullible taxpayers of their money. Continued attempts by NATO to encroach into border states of Russia heightened Russian insecurities in this regard, still kept raw by the memories of the destruction caused by the Nazis, and which is remembered every year on Victory Day (May 9).

NATO wants the border states of Russia in its membership. Obviously this is interpreted as a threatening gesture , which has played havoc with growth of democratic institutions in Russia , as Putin uses these sorts of external threats and paranoia of invasion to consolidate his grip on the Russian government through hypernationalist propaganda.

NATO seems to be keen on getting Ukraine as a NATO member. Why can't it get Russia as well as a NATO member, and give it a privileged status on accordance with its technological and military capabilities !!! This would give Russia and Russians a sense of security, and would have avoided all these issues that had cropped up after Ukraine showed inclination to join NATO.

But of course, if Russia becomes a NATO member, then there would be no bogeyman to be scared off, and there would be no need to spend so much money on NATO operations, and that would be a major tragedy for the military-industrial complex and corporates that need the money to finance their lavish lifestyle.
So Russia did no wrong when they took crimea and now going full attack on Ukraine? It is Nato fault?

Lol...

Why did NATO have to come to Russia's borders, through a military alliance with Ukraine with a hostile stance, considering that they have refused Russia's proposal to join NATO !!

When the USSR deployed nuclear weapons in Cuba, the U.S. went to the extent of threatening nuclear war in case the weapons were not taken out. The U.S.S.R showed restraint and pulled back.

Now when the situation is reversed, the U.S. and Nato is crying foul and not withdrawing back from sensitive border areas of Russia.

If you ask me, it is double standards.

Only to protect countries within NATO that has border next to Russia in case Russia wants more than Ukraine. That is Natos mission, to protect a free world.

You need to think out of the box.

NATO encroaching on Russia's borders will be seen as a threatening gesture, especially when NATO refused Russia's proposal to join NATO.

Russia possess more nuclear weapons than the U.S. and NATO combined, and hence their security needs should be given importance and due attention, in order to prevent a nuclear holocaust that would wipe out the U.S., Europe and Russia , and end their national existence permanently.

I heard America had to take weapons out of turkey back then, is that true

Yes, those weapons were not as dangerous as the ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons targetting the U.S. in nearby Cuba. Turkey is not closeby to the U.S.S.R, and the Soviets probably asked for such concessions during dialogue sessions with the Americans, so that it would not be a futile exercise completely.

Sorry, I have lost all faith in Putin.
And peace is the only way this world will survive.

Eastern block countries decided to join NATO of the their own volition after the Berlin wall came down. So the narrative that NATO has aggressively expanded to "threaten" Russia is nonsense.

Then why deny NATO membership to Russia, then !

The graveyards peace is not what you have in mind, I hope.

All I can say is, please allow Russia to join NATO as well. If not stay off Russia's borders .
Peace means to live like neighbors with no fighting, no killing and no hostility

Its not up to me if Russia are allowed in to Nato, but after what they did to Ukraine there is no hope for Russia to be a part of NATO

If Ukraine becomes part of NATO, NATO can easilly position missiles there to target Russia, and can give them an advantage. This also considering that the Americans strategic document favor pre-emptive targetting of Russia's missiles and nuclear weapons.

This is why Russia decided on the invasion to prevent such positioning of weapons there.

I am not in favor of such invasions, which is horrible, and consider it a defeat for diplomacy and dialogue mechanisms and lack of necessary impartiality.

The best the world can do is to remove all nuclear weapons from every country.

This is Cold War logic, prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union. It's outdated and irrelevant. The US is less committed to NATO now, and most European NATO members aren't spending enough on defence to pose a serious threat to Russia.

You sound like an apologist for Russian aggression.

Step into the shoes of the Russians and then think for yourself what they should have done. They are guided by security apprehensions from their security experts.

True to a large extent. The U.S and Nato have adversaries already in Islamic terrorists and China. Why create more adversaries unnecessarily.

The U.S-Nato defeat at the hands of the Taliban after wasting trillions of dollars and thousands of casualties, shows that they need to rethink their strategic thinking.

Russia threatens 'military and political consequences' if Finland, Sweden try joining NATO

Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned against other countries attempting to join NATO after Russia started a war with Ukraine Thursday.

“Finland and Sweden should not base their security on damaging the security of other countries and their accession to NATO can have detrimental consequences and face some military and political consequences,” Zakharova said in a viral clip of a press conference.

Maybe it's time for NATO to say that a military attack on Finland or Sweden will be considered an attack on NATO.

Putin has to be stopped now. I hope that Ukraine with help from white-hat hackers can stop him before the war spreads.
I dunno. Sweden has some pretty lethal advanced tech.
