It's unfortunate that this information comes to us by way of an illegal leak. But I'm grateful for it being leaked. At this point, I am slightly skeptical that the general public is going to be provided with all information on the Russian involvement in the 2016 campaign and election and the Trump administration.
The Intercept article, after describing the hack in detail, says:
The NSA, however, is uncertain about the results of the attack, according to the report. “It is unknown,” the NSA notes, “whether the aforementioned spear-phishing deployment successfully compromised the intended victims, and what potential data could have been accessed by the cyber actor.”

I hope at some point we get learn exactly what were the results of the attack, what data were accessed or changed.
On social media, this jailed NSA leaker a 25-year-old federal contractor is member of Resist movement, #Resistance, an ethnomasochist who believes in her own words “being white is terrorism”, #BlackLivesMatter, #waitingtodie, she replied to the Foreign Minister of Iran saying she’d “stand with” Iran over America if Trump declared war, she tweeted to the Foreign Minister of Iran quote “If our Tangerine in Chief declares war, we stand with you!”, she is a Bernie Sanders active supporter and angry at Hillary for interfering in the US election process to try and sabotage the Sanders campaign, she is also an active supporter of the Islamic Society of North America.
This Alt-Left radical is a contractor for Pluribus International Corporation which is a contingent of 40,000 contractors who are not actual core NSA agents. She sent the “classified” document to The Intercept, an online news organization which is little known as started in 2014 and it’s first story was a report about the NSA's involvement in the U.S. lethal drone strikes “resulting in the deaths of innocent people”.
In fact, the “document” does not detail any successful hack of voting machines or changing votes, it states some organization which is likely related to Russia to have targeted employees at US facilities including election related facilities with “phishing” emails sent the employees which were fake emails which were disguised as messages from Google in an attempt to get passwords. This also included one company as well, VR Systems which is an company that provides different systems some of which is used in limited capacity for metrics and in voter registration campaigns and absentee ballot email address lists, in fact VR Systems doesn’t sell voting machines. The document does not indicate that any such “phishing” was successful in gaining any access to anything nor even that it was proven to be Russian sourced.
In my opinion – I could be wrong – this effort to hack the DNC and probe election related sourcing was not Russia despite the fact that obviously Russia along with the most prominent hacking nation of China and pretty much every other nation in the world tries to hack the US government all the time – there is nothing secret or unknown about this and is common knowledge, considering the rather low level and sophomoric nature of these and other phishing attempts makes me believe they were perpetrated by ardent Bernie Sanders supporters including in such contractor organizations in an attempt to strike back at Hillary’s rigging the primary Democratic elections and to hit back at the establishment control of the DNC which was trying to sabotage the Sanders campaign. Specifically, the attempts noted in this document were not attempts by the Russian government at all, but by ardent Sanders supporters. Which actually, have a valid reason for being angry.
This rather stupid girl and ardent Alt-Leftist is going to be found guilty, there is no doubt about it. She is likely going to go to prison for a rather useless effort. I do not really feel sorry for her, even though I agree with many Sanders supporters that Hillary Inc. attempted to hack and control
the Sanders campaign itself and the entire DNC establishment attempted and largely succeeded in interfering in the fair US primary elections to sabotage other candidates.

A crew of highly skilled hackers could make it worse for us than a shooting war. With more and more and more stuff all hooked up the the 'net and wi-fi, cyber wars don't even need soldiers with guns in your land to make lives difficult.
If anything, it's a focal point of why we need to focus so much of education, science, and technology. Russia has been technologically competitive with America since the days of USSR, and if they leave us behind now, along with China who is rapidly advancing, America will very likely loose its place as a super power, as a very wealthy nation, and we'll leave ourselves wide open for cyber attacks.
