Santa claus

blackout

Violet.
I'm 35 years old, Santa still leaves something for me in my parents house. I think it's cool. My kids are all about Santa. Nothing wrong with a bit of magic. I saw Richard Dawkins interviewed on telly, even he said that he brought his daughter up with Santa. Christmas is the best.

Guess we all have a different idea of Majik. ;)
I personally like a WHOLE lot of it. :rainbow1:

So nobody was creeped out by the idea of Santa like I was?
I mean a big fat man in a red suit who watches me every moment of every day to make sure I am being good? He's like the head of the KGB.

Um...
And how is that any different from the way many people present God?

God is rarely refered to as an actual person. And I never really believed in a god to begin with.
I mean you see presents under the tree which say Santa on them when you are 6 and you assume that Santa actually put them there.
God? He didn't really do anything I could actuall see, feel or use.

Lie to your kids?
Teach kids to take what you tell them with a grain of salt, inasmuch as you will clearly not hesitate to lie to them if you feel it might be fun?

How do you expect your kids to grow to respect truth or value honesty? What kind of example are you setting?

It their own parents are exposed as liars and hypocrits how can we expect kids ever to learn trust or respect?

Yeah... it's funny isn't it?

Santa is so easily either a "stand in" for "God":priest:, OR for "Satan".:fork:
(depending on the POV taken))
I love that! Makes for some good wholesome x-mass fun!
In fact it's the ONLY thing I can really say I love about the mystery man in red.

:icon_evil What's he hidin' under that cap anyway?

From my perspective it just highlights how totally wack "the world's"
conception of God is to begin with.
Counterfiet "Gods" abound. ;)

(and still the poor get trinkets...
while the rich kids are showered,as per usual,
in mountains of mass produced abundance)

(very benevolent santy...
the elves can't even afford to buy their own kids
the very products they produce in his "sweat shops")

gotta love em!

I don't like Santa Claus. I don't see any great harm in Santa, but I don't see any point in Santa, either, and I don't think there's anything charming about the story of Santa or about children believing in it. I've known a few small children who were afraid of Santa Claus, and lots of them are afraid of mall Santas. What are the kids getting out of it? Isn't it really for the benefit of adults?

My parents went through the motions of Santa Claus, but I don't remember ever believing in him, and my father says I never did. I guess my parents just aren't convincing liars. ;)

Still, I don't care if other people want to play this game; I just think it's silly.

I will not be rearing my children in the Santa mythology because I too have trouble lying to any children (at my expense). Every year mrscardero puts up the Christmas decorations and every year they go by unnoticed and unappreciated. I’m thinking in a few years, I can convince her of the folly of the holiday seasons.

Honestly. Everyone's too educated. In the words of Plato:

"To be ignorant, man first requires an education"

Enjoy the time of the year. Get the stick from up your rear and celebrate!

The key to living is to enjoy every moment of the year because life is a celebration. It's not supposed to be designated to a specific time of the year. If one has to lie or needs a reason to give that impression, than the moments and feelings are as plastic as the holiday gifts that others give and receive.

Is make believe a lie?
Why do you presume that gifts are plastic?

Is make believe a lie?
That's essentially what make believe is? If it is not fact, it is false, if it is false, it is intentionally untrue. If it is one’s intention in the telling of a Untruth, than it is a lie. Whether or not lying makes baby Jesus cry would be a matter of faith and a discussion best left to another thread.

I couldn't think of a quick response for the plastic.

I was just thinking that if Santa is indeed a lie, he's well worth it. Then I thought of the saying that 'lies are the glue that hold society together'. I tell little lies all the time, e.g. Mum 'was my cake nice?' Me-'yes'. BIG lie., In that situation I feel the lie is worth it. It made my Mum feel better than the truth. Same applies to Santa. Most of us tell lots of lies, why pick Santa to make a stand for truth? I'd prefer to tell my Mum that her cake was rotten. (which I won't)

Reason, and reason again
The story of the real St. Nicholas is enough for me. I know I won't be telling my kids myths about some invisible fat man who promotes consumption just because you fake being nice. It should be about the real: family, friends, and community. The closest I'll come to Santa is talking about the good Catholic patron. I was fed the Santa lie. Believed it until a late age. Looking back I think the truth is a much better alternative.

I think it would serve most kids well to get coal one year, too.

Also, I always think it's funny when people try to explain to their kids why Santa doesn't visit poor kids. Or why bad kids get more gifts than their more deserving friends.

One good thing about telling kids there's a Santa -- perhaps it prepares them to live in a world where so many people will lie to them about much more important things -- such as the reasons to invade Iraq.
