As if the Bible isn't filled with enough nonsense about them, we have the Catholic Church certifying "miracles" - albeit after investigation by scientific experts (huh?). In order to canonize someone special, the Church first has to confirm that the person in question is in heaven. I would so love to be able to sit in on that decision making process!

The Bishops where the person lived apparently petition Rome, then the candidate's life is judged by theological experts and cardinals. Once these guys are satisfied then I guess its up to il Papa to decide if they are sainthood material or not.

Is there anything these guys can't do? They re-wrote history to suit themselves, they voted by a show of hands to declare the prophet Yesuah the son of god, they even decided when his birthday would be ...

Jeeze ... gimme a break.

What is wrong with investigating miracle claims in a thorough methodical fashion? That sounds like a valid and useful activity to me. I like to know what they determine about interesting people/saints.

I believe these investigations are credible but nothing of this sort is infallible. My personal opinion is that miracles have occurred through saints.

If you want to be an unexamined atheist you can just ignore all this and call it nonsense. The Catholic Church isn't going to bother you.

Yes, its very strange that the Catholic Church decides who the Catholic Church considers a saint.

[/sarcasm]

I always think about those souls in Heaven waiting for a promotion to be decided in Rome (not Heaven).

I think it is very funny.

When are they deciding? I m sick of playing this cheap harp. I need to be a saint now. Bigger harp, bigger desk and all, and for some reason the Boss seems to wait for His deputy's decision although He already knows which one will be...:)

Now this is one of the reasons why its pointless to reply.
I'm curious if you got the point Sir Doom was making. The Catholic Church or any religious or non-religious organization should be free to assign titles and statuses as they please.

Plus, it's not proper form to start a debate thread and then walk away as I've noticed on other threads of yours. If you think everybody's replies are unworthy of response then you must be too smart to be on RF with us types.
