satiprathA?

Jaskaran Singh

Divosūnupriyaḥ

praNAm everyone,
Is this verse from puRanANNURu speaking of satiprathA or not?
I welcome any response, although it would be great if someone who is familiar with ancient (saNkam) tamizh could also respond...:

நீர் வார் கூந்தல் இரும் புறம் தாழ பேர் அஞர்க் கண்ணள் பெருங் காடு நோக்கி தெருமரும் அம்ம தானே தன் கொழுநன் முழுவு கண் துயிலா கடியுடை வியன் நகர் சிறு நனி தமியள் ஆயினும் இன்னுயிர் நடுங்கும் தன் இளமை புறங் கொடுத்தே -247

I didn't get what you have said in op. But I wanna say one thing " Sati Pratha" has many scriptural supports.

As far as I know, Sati Pratha is mentioned in Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana. In Bhagavata Purana, it is stated that after death of Yadavas their wives went for Sati. And such many more......

Once this Sati Pratha was a Divine part of Vedic dharma . But under the effect of Kaliyuga, purity of women became lost and it resulted in seeing Sati as a crime and for this Sati Pratha some people blamed Bramhanas for no reason. In fact, Sati was a door to heaven for a woman who devotes all her life to husband and worships him as a God.

Be your own guru
I know only of the reference in RigVeda in which the brother of the deceased asks the women to come off the funeral pyre. But you already know that.

I have no idea, but I have a suggestion for you. Put your question on tamilBrahmins.com and someone there will be able to answer.

I would say that a widow has a better chance of realising God through bhakti, meditation and tapas, than through immolating herself .
