Saudi Arabian court sentences Palestinian poet Ashraf Fayadh to death for apostasy

Remember folks, the KSA is a "moderate" Arab country and an ally of the US and an important player in the fight against ISIS and Islamic extremism. Let me know what you think about this. Should poetry be punishable by death? Should abandoning one's faith be a capital crime?

Saudi Arabian court sentences Palestinian poet Ashraf Fayadh to death for apostasy

A Saudi Arabian court has sentenced a Palestinian poet to death for apostasy, abandoning his Muslim faith, according to trial documents seen by Human Rights Watch, its Middle East researcher Adam Coogle said on Friday.

Ashraf Fayadh was detained by the country's religious police in 2013 in Abha, in southwest Saudi Arabia, and then rearrested and tried in early 2014.

The verdict of that court sentenced him to four years in prison and 800 lashes but after appeal another judge passed a death sentence on Fayadh three days ago, said Coogle.

. . .

In January liberal writer Raif Badawi was flogged 50 times after his sentencing to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes for blasphemy last year, prompting an international outcry.

I believe this is the same news source responsible for the bogus story about Saudi Arabia building 600 mosques in Europe. Check your sources.

Mohammad had poets slaughtered for writing satire about him. Just following his sunnah.

There is only thing that you cannot do in Saudi Arabia ( you know I lived there). You cannot criticize Islam ,not even one word. But rest of the life is not as miserable as you imagine. It is also one of the safest places, there is no mafia over there,no shootings either. Social security system over there is awesome. There is no tax. Everything is very cheap and fresh.

What I mean is that rather than the heat over there,Saudi arabia is not a hell. There are so many positive things about it. If I had a child, I would not hesitate to bring my family to KSA. There is no gangs over there.

By the way, all the fruits over there are organic as mufti (grand imam) declared it is haraam for inorganics and they did this before the fashion of organic food started.

There is a gay life over there, better than east europe and they gays in KSA are really cute. Don't worry they won't behead you for this.

They don't have gay pride in India or China, too. When will you condemn them?

Lol...about the same time as you start defending their position on gay rights, I reckon. How about it?

For the record I have regularly criticized my own country on gay rights, but compared to ANY of those you've mentioned we're well ahead of the curve. I have this weird belief that we should just treat people as people.

Whatever I will tell you about Saudi Arabia, you won't believe me,I know. Do not compare KSA with anything. Believe me,I lived there.

I haven't. My business partner has. To be clear, a burgeoning underground gay community comes as no shock to me. Are you suggesting this community could be anything other than underground? Or that Catholic mass can be openly held? Or that women can work? Or drive?

Or are you simply suggesting that crime rates and social security in an oil rich country are pretty good and that should be enough?

The hell? That's insanity. They pretty much worship Muhammad. Explains why Europeans used to call them Muhammadans.
Not quite. They called them 'Muhammadans' because they initially thought that Muslims viewed him(Muhammad) the way they(Christians) did Jesus, with a bit of Mary thrown in. I say this because obviously the first two Christian sects to encounter the "little brother" of the Abrahamic faiths were Roman Catholics & Byzantine/Greek Orthodox, who as you know, use "worship" or revere Mary as a 'link' to Jesus and through Jesus, to God/YHWH/Allah.

Catholics have, and in some cases still do, get similar accusations by other Christians(read-as Protestants and Even-More-Than-Usual-Historically-Incompetent Christians who reject the Protestant label in favour of something nigh-hipster like, such as Latter-Day Saint or Jehovah's Witness) as worshiping Mary in the stead of God.
