Hey folks,
I saw a bunch of people come over to my site from religousforums.com in the last several hours and wanted to jump over here to say hello. I'm very glad this issue has resonance here.
Keep in mind that there are a lot of parrots in Edgewater and they're going to rebuild the nests that were destroyed. It's marvelous -- practically miraculous -- to watch them reconstruct them. The whole community of birds drops whatever it's doing and helps the families that have been made homeless. The flock really pulls together and I'm sure that within a month or the Edgewater parrots will be going back to their main business, which is yakking, squawking, playing, and, of course, raising families.
The long-term problem, of course, is that the power company will be back, and it's especially terrible if they come back when there are young birds in the nest (young monk parakeets stay at home a long time). There is no provision for giving them sanctuary in New Jersey, because of the state laws which penalize the parrots for being "illlegal aliens." This is why we're trying to develop a long-term solution in Edgewater so that the birds can build their nests away from the power poles. It's still too early to tell whether this strategy will work, but it's the focus of a lot of pro-parrot people in NJ, and if it works, we hope it becomes a model for other states trying to balance the interests of humans and birds.
Best,
Steve Baldwin
