Yes I think there is a significant chance of a third World War now. The more brutally Putin's army destroys the cities of Ukraine, and the more of its citizens it kills, the harder it will be for other countries to sit and watch.

I certainly hope not. While the idea may sound good in theory to stop Putin, I would expect such a war to not only lead to more deaths among Ukrainians but also among many other countries' populations.

The advanced military technology and nuclear weapons the world currently possesses would most likely mean that nobody would win in a third world war. Such an event could spell the end of our modern civilization, so I hope things never come to that.

It may be that Putin is bluffing about nuclear weapons. He may be deploying the "madman" strategy, that Nixon used some decades ago. The West must be very careful to exert maximum pressures on him but not in a way that makes him feel he has to resort to nuclear escalation.

The problem is that Russia doesn't really have a lot of allies, this is not like half the world is on their side and the other half on the other. Even though China is not supporting NATO and the west, they are also not directly supporting Putin either. I think China could end the war almost instantly, if they sanctioned Russia as the west have, because then the economy of Russia would be in complete free fall more or less, and I doubt that they would be able to keep things going for very long , if they lost China as a trading partner.

I don't see any reason or suggestions that China is interested in a global war, very little, if any would be gained by this by China.

But then another question arises: what would guarantee that a cornered Putin, believing he had nothing to lose, wouldn't launch nukes?

I find that scenario bleak to think about. Hopefully it never becomes a reality.

Personally, I think we are in a worse situation than in 1962 (during the Cuban Missile crisis), since there was no actual military conflict going on then and mostly just brinkmanship, but it appears there is very little chance of a resolution of this affair and where it could just escalate into much worse.

Oh yes, I had forgotten that incident. But if I recall correctly, it was a technical glitch that only came to light years later, so it didn't represent any extreme tension between the superpowers at the time.

To many on the receiving end of military violence, the outcome of a nuclear war may well be the exact same as that of traditional warfare: death to them and their loved ones as well as destruction of their property.

Worrying about nuclear fallout is something only survivors can do.

The West destoried (Iraq ,Libya,Yogslavia )and sanction all real allies of Russia,like Iran Cuba Cenezuela.
Ukrain leaders was not smart, they live next big country ,never be allie to their enemy(West )

years. By the end of his term, Reagan had done an about
face, & was friendly towards Russians. The cold war had
