"School Surveys 7th-Graders on Oral Sex"

Skwim

"A middle school in Massachusetts is under fire for requiring children to complete a graphic sex survey -- without parental knowledge or consent -- that included questions about sexual partners and oral sex.

The Rutherford Institute, a civil liberties organization, filed a complaint with the U.S. Dept. of Education against the Fitchburg School Committee. They are representing the two middle school-aged daughters of Arlene Tessitore.

“Kids were actually told to sit down and take them,” said John Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute. “The parents here are very upset.”

“One of the questions is, ‘have you ever had oral sex,’” Whitehead said. “You’re talking about kids who probably don’t even know what oral sex is.”

He said the survey also delved into even more graphic language."

Gotta say, I don't think I heard about oral sex until a grade or two later, not that finding out about oral sex in seventh grade would have warped me anymore than I am. Actually, I see nothing wrong with the question other than I doubt that more than a scattered few of those who did have oral sex would ever admit to it.

Edited to add: Thinking about a bit more I did indeed know what oral sex was, but I don't think I would have recognized it by the label "oral sex."

There are kids have sex in middle school these days. Maybe the school wanted to know how many and what kind of sex.

I was thinking that it's most likely a part of a much larger study.

Don't know what oral sex is? Yeah right. I didn't know what it was until later either, but there are sixth graders nowadays doing all that kind of stuff, not just oral. It's sickening, actually.

This is overblown. Sex is nothing. There are drugs, bullying, and firearms to worry about, among other things.

The results of sexual activity while ignorant of its consequences can be just as harmful.

This is the real problem, idiots like this Whitehead guy who quite possibly honestly believes middle school kids don`t know what oral sex is.

If you`ve got middle school kids who don`t know what oral sex is then you need the school to teach them something.
You`ve already screwed up.

I wish I had a page right about now.

Wait what?!

Maybe I should take a page out of Clinton's book!

I'm here for children's parties.

Just as harmful as a bullet to the brain pan? Just as harmful as becoming addicted to meth? Or just as harmful as each day getting beaten up after school? Which one of those is sex routinely just as harmful? I'm curious what you mean.

Yeah, I think so.

If a kid has no idea what sexual activity means, they are more susceptible to abuse from other kids, adults, or their families.

They are also open to contracting diseases that could effect them for the rest of their lives.

It's probably not as bad as a bullet to the brain, but the pain lasts a lot longer.

I don't see why it's ANY of the school's freikin' buisness.

I think there's an underlying assumption here that knowledge of oral sex would somehow be harmful to these kids.
I think it's this assumption that's questionable.

Umm, some kids in ELEMENTARY school know what oral sex is. Not that this is something to be ashamed of as I'm highly suspicious of anyone who touts the line ignorance is bliss, but I think our pretending-to-be-prude society needs to get over itself.

All too many parents refuse to teach their kids about sexual conduct until high school. Some don't even cover it at all.

On a serious not how was this question raised in the context of eduction of this particular age group?

Was the teacher like "The colonies were declaring independence over taxation and by the way....who here has given a hummer?".
