If only it wouldn't cause a distraction from other students and their studies. Also as long as the female clothing she wears doesn't break the school dress code it shouldn't be a problem in my opinion.

I would sue the school for violating my civil rights, especially seeing as gender dysphoria is a recognized medical condition and she is following the standard treatment. So this is discrimination.

Personally, I feel for her because I pretty much had a nervous breakdown, fell into a deep depression and stopped going to school when I was 13. Looking back on it, I'm pretty sure my gender dysphoria was a big underlying cause since that's when puberty starts to hit most people.

If I was her, I would just home school and make friends outside of it all. Screw the school, screw the judgement, I'll take option B. If she didn't shed have my full support, and Id support her to go as a female. If/When she got kicked, id have an attorney right there to hop on board just to turn some heads.

It seems the school officials lack both empathy & a clear understanding of the legal environment.

Having been homeschooled, it is miserable. Take it from a person like me who has no friends. I have never had a single friend my entire life.

From the content of the article it seemed liked she wasn't so good at making friends so I doubt she would make friends even if she was home school. Try to move to a city with schools more open minded?

I wouldn't run off to another school. I'd just sue them. They won't win anyway. Recently a 6 year old trans girl won the right to use the girl's room at her school, in court. Public schools aren't allowed to discriminate like that.

Plus, young trans people growing up today are a lot luckier in that this issue is more visible and understood than, say, when I was in school. When I was 13, I had no idea what was going on with me. I was even in therapy during my middle school and high school years and never once mentioned my gender issues because I didn't know a damn thing about gender dysphoria and transsexualism, so I didn't mention it lest I come off as a freak or crazy. So I kept talking about other stuff but didn't help me because it was ignoring a huge issue. I wish I could go back and do it over and live as a male during my school days. I would've been a lot happier and probably would've stayed in school instead of wrecking my education.

Home schooling would be a horrible idea for a person suffering from gender dysphoria. It's important for us to be around people who are positive and understanding. Otherwise you just become a recluse and that will really screw you up. That's what happened to me and I'm still suffering because of it. That school should have an LGBT group and her and her mom should look into trans support groups in her area.

I would think concerns might be over potential bullying and student interaction. Were not talking about adult students here that stand more to reason. It's a bit shocking to note this person is only 13 years old. A minor. It seems a bit early imo for a very young person to undergo something like this. Hopefully a decision not to be regretted later on but then again im not this childs parent.

Normally I would diss the school, but I would think this situation needs special preparations made prior to ensure proper accessibility and fair treatment involving all concerned. Im against denial to any student that is none of the schools business, yet there are assurances that need to be determined in light of the childs and peers ages and level of maturity. Im guessing thats what the school is trying to do but is having difficulty in figuring how to go about it.

All sai, it would be prudent to allow this person to attend as a female and address issues if and when they crop up and educate other students on transexulity. Im sure at this early age, a transgender person is somewhat rare and sensitive, especially at the level of maturity concerning other students.

Hoping an amicable solution arises that is fair and safe.

Looks like this will probably work itself out. From the article:

"Certainly the family has legal avenues if they wish to pursue them," said Michael Silverman of the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund. "The family would have a strong case against discrimination."

District officials now say they are willing to work with the family to come up with a solution. Peters hopes there can be an outcome for her child.

Children know what their gender is by the time they're about 2 or 3 years old. For transsexuals, gender dysphoria generally starts to occur in young childhood and really becomes hellish during puberty. So, no - she's not too young at all. Her experience is relatively typical for transsexual people.

Obviously no school is going to deny a transgender teen to flip identities considering that they know dam well that denying them is discrimination, especially for a transgender teen. The reason has got to be related to the scenario where, lets say, a gay male decides to flip identities because he felt he should have been born a girl.
Where does the school draw the line? Though, imo, we cannot compare a transgender to a gay male desiring to be female and therefore the line should be drawn in-between.

How are you defining "flipping" identity? What does this translate to?
