It sounds like we are not. Economists have been wrongly predicting overpopulation. They have done this many times. Also, overpopulation if it ever happens is self correcting. We don't need to leave earth for that.

To end all life on Earth would require a very intense catastrophic event. To end the reign of human life on Earth would not require that degree of catastrophic event. We could bring that on, ourselves. The Earth's biosphere is complex and balanced. Once that balance gets seriously thrown off, the systems break down. There are life forms that could survive it, but not ours. Recovery could take millions of years and result in a very different kind of 'biosphere' than we're used to.

The earth is overpopulated by about 300%. It's not that earth can't feed 11 billion people, it's that earth can't feed more than 2 billion people without the loss of other species. Our greed for resources, food, water, energy, living area has already started the sixth extinction event which may well hit us eventually.
I do not see the world as some victim of human persecution. Suffering is a by-product of evolution as is extinction. 'Greed' is a moral dilemma which threatens our own species, not to be confused with natural conservation. Taking land from animals is a land management decision not greed. Killing and replacing other species is natural not unnatural. Driving them out, killing them, being annoyed with them: very human. It is the voice of evolution speaking. Those species which are compatible with us we like to keep, and those that are incompatible we do not keep. But. We should make sure we don't eliminate ourselves, because that would be stupid.
I don't know about the 300% number but have heard it somewhere before. The destruction of species is undesirable usually, but on the other hand I'm not going to live in a cloud of mosquitoes. I just am not, and sometimes it is them or us.

The 300% (or 2 billion) number is what earth can deal with if those 2 billion live a moderate western lifestyle. It is roughly the number where natural carbon sinks could have prevented, or at least delayed, climate change. Roughly the number where we wouldn't have overfished the oceans, burned the rain forests and expanded into all wildlife territories. Earth overshoot day would be on December 31st.
I'm with you on the mosquitoes, though.
