Scientology a CULT?

Is it a cult?

And that's precisely why the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not a cult. We follow the teachings of Jesus to a far greater extent than do the members of many of the Christian Churches you'd call legitimate religions.

And we'll finish right there.

I hope you realize that not all Mormons were supportive of their Church's position.
Of course I do. I also recognize that this applies to almost every religion.

Last June, roughly 450 of us marched with a group called "Mormons Building Bridges" in Salt Lake CIty's Pride Parade. I expect even more of us to show up last year. And recently, the Church's leadership made a point of stating that any member of the Church was free to hold any position they wanted to on the issue of gay rights and could speak out on social media without any fear of retribution.

(I just love how threads get off-topic so quickly the minute Mormonism is mentioned.)
That's good news. Next item on the agenda: women and their role in (mormon) society.

Pat Robertson routinely tells broke elderly people not to quit tithing and to get a job, and that's completely legal. Immoral as hades, but completely legal.

As in harm others, harms self, in all senses of the word Minor and severe.

I havnt spoken with anyone of that faith and I have not been to their church so I have no reason to call them a cult in the negative sense of te word

That is however an important detail to notice. Some religions go out of their way to silence their dissenters, or even to disapprove of the disagreement before it can be expressed at all.

Many more attack the credibility, relevance or respectability of their dissenters.

It is actually fairly rare for an established religion to say outright that their adherents have a full right to disagree and speak their minds about an issue of faith, among other reasons because most have some degree of fear of appearing conflicted.

My comment was not in relation to Scientology. It was in your equivocation that legal equals moral.

Id say no. The word cult has negative conotations. The beliefs on their website seem universal uniteerianist. Any religion that promotes good is not a cult in the negative meaning the word.
Watch the HBO Documentary that came out last night. You will never be able to say that Scientology "promotes good." L. Ron Hubbard was one of the most disgusting sociopaths of all time. If you look at his actual history, he wasn't too far from Jonestown. He pretty much enslaved young kids in the beginning. And, he admitted on several occasions that the "religion" was a crock.

I mean we could swing it another way. Howblong has scientolgy around a d how many members does it have? All religions were cults.

If based on negative things, Ill take your word for it. I have no interest in the faith itself

I mean, their belief system is logically troubling, but what belief system isn't. It's how they try to protect their church, how they harass people who speak out against it, and how they threaten the well-being of their members when they try to leave the church. I would definitely suggest watching the new documentary though. It is enlightening.

It's really sad Hubbard didn't just stick with his science fiction books. He was an utterly amazing and gifted author. What a waste.

Scientology, Jehovah's Witness', and Mormons are all sides of the same die. They resonate with people who are too disinterested to bother trying to see the truth.
