Self Check-Out

I like it at Meijer. It saves me time.
But I'd never use it at Walmart, which has a history
of vigorously prosecuting shoppers for errors &
malfunction of their machines. Use a cashier there,
& always keep your receipt.
Know your store.

They have like 20+ registers, yet only 2 or 3 open at the most. I hate going through self checkout if I have a cart full of groceries. It's tedious and time consuming, it's prone to errors, and when they happen the machine puts itself on hold until an employee comes to assist who's usually either already assisting someone else or nowhere in sight, the bags often stick together so you have to fidget with them while try pull them apart, all while you have a line of impatient customers behind you waiting for you to wrap it up. People should get an employee discount for using self-checkout.

That said, the door greeters usually only pretend to check your receipt.

I seldom use them. I like dealing with an actual human, and I don't like having to go through all the stuff to weigh produce.

I agree, one using self checkout oughta get you a discount.

The discount is paid in time saved.....if the machine
cooperates. About half the time, I need help.

I don't find it saves me time. I have to check out and deal with the kids.

I often need help, too.
Your mistake is having kids.
I made that one too.
Now I no longer acquire any of those.
However, my new granddaughter is pretty good.
(Someone else puts up with all the fuss.)

They arrived at my corner of the woods a couple of years ago. Just a couple of months ago one of the two supermarkets that I visit practically every week also introduced face biometrics recognition to identify me and my credit card as a payment option.

They work great, I use them almost exclusively now. I have needed help some times, particularly when first learning how to weight items for the machine.

But it is very much a convenience for me. No downsides to speak of.

Welcome to how the cashier feels too. They just get paid for it.

I'd never use it at Walmart
We have a Wal-Mart here, but neither of us has been in it in over ten years. The last time I was there, there was no self-checkout option, but apparently there is now (see link below, a discussion on a local message board), and nobody seems too enamored with it or Wal-Mart in general. Nobody mentioned being arrested for shoplifting.

They have a delivery service, but I just saw this on a local restauranteurs Facebook feed. He shops retail every day, stopping at five places buying groceries for his restaurant, and Wal-Mart is one, but he doesn't trust their delivery service. I don't know the story on that picture, but apparently somebody got a Wal-Mart delivery with a half-eaten container of ice cream, or maybe it melted, drained some of its liquid content, and then was refrozen while lying on its side, but the line looks a little jagged for that:

My friend ordered groceries, and someone ate half of her candy bar, folded it shut, and put it back in the bag.

I use self checkout nearly every time if it's an option. I usually buy small amounts of things at a time, but if I have a lot of things I need to buy then I'll go to the cashier. I've never had issues using self checkout
