Self-immolation

Antioch longed to be eaten by lions and got his wish.
That is just funny.

Yes, dying as a martyr, a witness to Christ and God is what many desire. It is not the pain as you mentioned, but this is not avoided; it is expected to be part of the package by most.

You inspired me to start a whole nother thread on the topic :). You will find plenty of quotes from the Saints there. They certainly speak of suffering as if it is something we should love and pray for

Yeah, well, I have said a few times I would like to kick James in his shins! :D It may all be his fault. :):)

2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
This monk burns himself alive and remains perfectly still as the Flames engulfed his flesh. It's amazing what the human mind is capable of.

What motivates Buddhist monks to bury themselves alive and be burned alive and starve themselves to death? What motivates Christians to desire to be tortured to death by non-christians? What is it that motivates Muslims to want to blow themselves up? Whatever it is, it's a powerful force!
Actually it's kind of nuts, but that's how the ax swings time to time.

What motivates Buddhist monks to bury themselves alive and be burned alive and starve themselves to death?

A couple of things.

1. Principle - Wikipedia. I know this is a foreign concept nowadays. But there are a few of us who still know what it means.

2. Never underestimate bio-feedback and an iron will. Buddhist monks are able to perform almost superhuman task by mastering these.

Combine both and you have the man in the video. Standing for his principles with an iron will. It is horrible and beautiful at the same time.

What are you talking about? One good gust of wind and he will flyaway like a sand mandala. There's a reason they are keeping them indoors.

Hmmm not quite sure what you mean here.
Hmmm... Usually takes a while or a bit, but it'll naturally become apparent on its own.

I'll quote a famous Buddhist saying in the interim which is, "Everybody sits".

For a Buddhist this is a means of protest that harms no one other than the protestor. This is important to them within the teachings of their belief.

It was an act of protest but very unusual for a Buddhist monk. A few such cases grab headlines but suicide was not encouraged by the Buddha.

Lâm Văn Túc, was a Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk who burned himself to death at a busy Saigon road intersection on 11 June 1963.[1] Quang Duc was protesting the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government led by Ngô Đình Diệm. Photographs of his self-immolation were circulated widely across the world and brought attention to the policies of the Diệm government.
