Sense Of Wonder

idea

Question Everything
I think the combination of science/God gives wonder.

The universe is infinite, there is no end
YouTube - Power of Ten

do not hide from knowledge thinking that it will kill the wonder. Knowledge adds to wonder, does not diminish from it.

But doesn't the reduction of natural events to miracles detract from that sense-of-wonder?

When you think about it, the entire universe that we live in is quite amazing. There are black holes that weigh millions of times more than what our sun does. The stars we see in the sky today are millions of light-years away. Our bodies are made of whirling atoms.

If we were only to look at our universe in the most superficial sense, as the examination of miracles requires us to, would we appreciate the universe as much as we do now?

I think so. Instead of feeling a sense of wonder about quantum physics, we'd be feeling it about a volcano or a hurricane.

Once we fully understand something, the sense of wonder is lost. If we knew everything there is to know, we wouldn't be amazed by anything.

Science both detracts from and adds to the sense of wonder. It brings understanding (loss of wonder) and poses new questions (gain of wonder).

Everything unknown nurtures a sense of wonder. Yes, science can rob us from it.

Everyone stop learning now. God makes babies and storks bring them and condoms are the work of the devil. Only gay people get aids and this guy named himself after the worst tom cruse movie I havent even as of yet bothered to see....

(I cant end in ad homs... its just silly and pointless.)

Ok...

So the premise is if something is unknown it Always nurtures a sense of wonder.

If you know something then its not unknown and thus it cant nurture a sense of wonder.

For instance... knowing that we orbit the sun does not inspire or nurture a sense of wonder as to why we do that. If we still thought everything orbitted us a planet then we would wonder more and thus science would never have robbed us of that wonder. :help:

First of all, I didn't name myself after the tom cruise movie; read some Norse mythology. And secondly, "why" is unknown also you f@cking idiot. Also, science is about understanding the laws of nature and the laws of the universe; its not about wonder and discoveries. Understanding something is not to discover, is to explore.

Science may be about understanding the universe, but isn't the universe even more wonderful knowing all that we do?

If I was a person completely unversed in science, looking at the night sky, I would say: "Look at the pretty points of light! What's that flash of light across the night sky? It's no doubt a portent of trouble. I'll sacrifice my goat to ward it away." But knowing a few things about science, I say instead: "Wow! Look at those stars! Think about how many light-years each star is away from us, and that the stars we see as faint prin-pricks of light are actually many times more massive than the sun. That nebula was once a that has went nova."

The amazement I experience of this vast universe is actually greater because I have attempted to make some basic comprehension of it, rather than accepting it at face value as a miracle.

As I quoted your post, yes.

In particular:

I say that understanding science can and does provide wonder, too.

No, wonder is what lead us to explore, and explore is what lead us to understand. That is science, exploring and understanding.

I am not sure how I should respond... LOL... I could report the post for purposefully avoiding the profanity filter. (Of course that would be a first lol)

I could add you to my ignore list. (Also would be a first... I even listed to FFH still so you sure dont rank there.)

Norse Mythology... LOL... Obviously your unfamiliar with my education.

I guess there is real no response. Webster and most dictionaries put forth understanding as to discover but they obviously didn't consult with you who think understanding is actually only exploration. (Also defined in a way to discover... hee hee)

Obviously you are illiterate. I didn't say that understanding is only exploration. I said that exploration leads us to understanding. Which means that we understand by exploring. Please do me a favor and read what I type, explore it, understand it... AND THEN maybe you can make an argument or set a new point to our debate here. If you are just going to type for the sake of it go **** yourself.

For someone who claims to be so close to God or religiously enlightened, you have some serious anger issues.

Valkyr1a, quit being a jerk. There are ways to point things out to people, without calling them names. I'm aware of the irony of calling you a jerk while pointing out better ways than name calling. But every post by you ends with you making an insult, so, I assume you are in fact a jerk.
